Arnaiz, Chivington and Jim Tribou. Shobert, however, was back on row six while Quarterley sat on the second row. When the flag dropped it was Rainey leading in turn one followed by Chivington. Rainey immediately turned up the wick and after one lap led Quanerley by three seconds. Chivington held third ahead of McMurter and Lance Jones; Shobert was seventh. Canadian Kathleen Coburn crashed her Suzuki in turn one to stan the second lap. Rainey turned a 1:08.9 lap on lap two while stretching his lead. The big story was hobert's charge thaI. had him up to ixth on lap two, fourth on lap four and third at the finish. Rainey cruised in with a 10.8second win over Quarterley, Shobert~ Jones and McMurter; heat tw'o was seven seconds faster than heat one. The factory Hondas of Rainey and Merkel sat on the outside of the front row for the unal with Quarterley's Eagle Racing Yamaha, Goodfellow's GT Racing GSXR Suzuki and Shobert's Bell/Vetter Honda making up the remainder of row one. Jones' problems began on the warm-up lap when he found his gas was shut off as he coasted to a stop behind the pits. A screwdriver was needed to turn the petcock on and by then the pack had entered turn one. Rainey narrowly led Shobert into the fiTSt corner, but by turn three Rainey was long gone. Goodfellow got by Shobert and at the end of the first lap the order read Rainey. Goodfellow, Shobert, Merkel, Quarterley and Ashmead. A good dice for second was underway with Goodfellow, Shobert, Merkel and Quarterley taking turn with the runner-up spot. By the end of the fourth lap Rainey had a six-second lead on Shobert and crew. Rainey encountered Jones on lap iour, butthe uperTeamriderwasn't going slow. Rainey got by, but it took awhile for the others to catch Jones as he was turning roughly the same lap times as the battle for second. Merkel dove under Quarterley in turn 10 to take over third on the fifth lap and was soon on Shobert. At this point Rainey led the third-placed Merkel' by 8.5 seconds. On lap seven, Merkel got by hobert and started pulling away. Quarterley and Goodfellow moved up to challenge Shobert, but by the II th lap the race for third was down to Quarterley and Shobert with Goodfellow slowing. By the 15th lap the battle for third was intensifying with Quarterley and Shobert going back and forth. Shobert had a horsepower advantage over Quarterley, but the two remained close and constantly swapped positions. Goodiellow was having a lonely ride in fifth, but after him ·it was another bailie. Chivington, Ashmead and Mercier were going at it while McMurter seemed on the ve.rge of catching the dicing group. Goodiellow caught up to Jones, but couldn't lose him as the two went through traffic with Jones was making up those lost places. At the end of the 25th lap, Rainey held a 12.4-second lead over Merkel with Quarterley and Shobert still duking it out for third. Goodfellow was still alone in fifth and McMurter had caught the group of Mercier, Chivington and Ashmead. Kocinski was 10th, but not making any move toward the pack in front of him. Shobert shot by Quarterley on the 27th lap, but it was Quarterley again on lap 28. Merkel had opened a 17second lead on the dicing duo at this point in the race.
