AMA Camel Pro Road Racing Series: Round 5 It's Rainey in Loudon Superbike By Paul Carruthers Photos by Bruce Newton LOUDON, NH, JUNE 15 Team Honda's Wayne Rainey made up for his third place finish in Saturday's Formula One class by totally dominating all 38 laps of the Superbike race at Loudon's Bryar 6 Motorsport Park. ., practice, had the fastest heat Rainey was the fastest in and led every lap of the Nation- al. Honda teammate Fred Merkel kept a hold on the poim lead in the Superbike portion oftheAMA's 1986 poim structure by finishing second, but Rainey pulled clear in the overall road racing championship poim chase. Third place wem to Grand National Champion Bubba Shobert after the dirt tracker put in an incredible performance on his Skip Aikenluned HRC Honda VF750. Shoben raced the emire distance with local favorite Dale Quarterley, but on the last lap the Texan ran 'er in hard on the brakes in turn eight to take the final rostrum postion. Third place also put Shobert in total command of the combined dirt/road racing $25.000 Camel Challenge Cup poim fund that is fast becoming known as tJ1e Bubba Cup. Quarterley held on to a close founh place with Gary Goodfellow taking fifth. Sixth place was a race-long affair with Michel Mercier beating Rueben McMurter, Dan Chivington and John Ashmead after the four- some ba llied for the entire 38 laps. Team Yamaha returned to racing after a two-race layoff with their connecting rod problem cured and John' Kocinski rode his FZ750 to 10th place. According to Yamaha's Ken Clark th problem, which was a manufacturing £law, is totally healed. Yamaha has sem replacement rod kits to its customers and can now concentrate its efforts on racing. Team rider Jimmy Filice had other problems from the start when he had tQ take evasive off-the-track action to avoid a fallen' John Bettencourt and the Modesto, California residem had to sellie for 15th. Rainey, who 'misya!culated his RS500 setup on Saturday and ended up third, vowed to leave his Superbike the way it was and just ride it>. And that's exactly what he did. Rainey had said earlier that it was the Formula One competition that got his heart rate upand that soon became evident as be had little trouble with his fellow Superbike competitors. New Zealand's Goodfellow led Ashmead and Merkel imo turn one of heat one to get the Superbike action rolling. Merkel didn't sit behind Ashmead for long, however, as the Team Honda pilot horsepowered his way past on the uphill behind tbe pits. Goodfellow had opened a short lead and led the field at the completion of lap one. Merkel and Ashmead led Kocinski and Filice to round out the top five. The order stayed the same with the exception of Filice gelling by his teammate Kocinski on the second lap. Bellencourt, meanwhile, had started dead last and was moving rapidly through the field. Merkel got Goodfellow in the same pLace he nailed Ashmead and the order was set. Merkel cruised to a 3.7second win over Goodfellow, Ashmead, Filice and Kocinski.
