Egloff, who will not compete this year, seys the August 26 to September 6 event wil' be limited to the first 40 entries and will feature enduro-like timekeeping. Avon vintage road racing tires, once availa!>le only in the United Kingdom, will soon make their debut in American vintage ~lasses. Avon announced recently it will offer to U.S. vintige racers the same tires long available to vintage racers in the U.K. Tires for the American market will carry an H-rating in traditional tread pallerns and are available in the same TF (Track Formula) compound as Avon's Super Venom TF. Motorcyclists and other OHV enthusiasts who wish to protect their right to ride the 1300 miles of existing OHV routes in California's San Bernardino National- Forest may now comment on a Draft Management Plan which would limit that use. FLYIN FRED MERKEL USES SUPERTRAPPS ON HlS WORKS SUPERBIKE Kenny Thibault, national warranty supervisor for U.S. Suzuki, recently presente'd graduate John Flores with $150 worth of service tools during Automotive Department Outstanding Student Awards ceremonies at Los Angeles Trade/Technical College. In 1979, Thibault was the first graduate to earn the award. A story in the June 5 edition.of The "lan Diego (California) Union newspaper was headlined "Ninja bikers called menace on back roads," referring to motorcyclists • riding twisty mountain roads in San Diego County. The story said " ... motorcyclists aboard Kawaseki-built Ninjas are little more than crazed speeders, riding a thin line between life and death, pushing the needle on their speedometers past the century mark." The story quoted Captain C.M. Douglas of the California Highway Patrol as saying "Ninja racers are going to one of three places: the morgue, the hospital or to jail." Another choice piece of the story, by staff writer J. Stryker Meyer, read "They pilot the powerful Kawasaki Ninja or the red, white and blue Honda Interceptor, both of which have engines that can exceed 1100 cubic centimeters. That's bigger than the engine found in some small cars. To drive the cycles, the drivers must scrunch down behind a small windshield." According to the story, Highway 94 has seen 55 accidents this year, 28 involving motorcycles "and of those several were Ninja racers," The story offered no statistical breakdown on involvement of Ninjas or Interceptors.
