8
remaining was Rainey, Merkel, Quarterley, Shobert, Mercier, Chivington,
McMurter and a fading Ashmead.
Lap 36 was a heavy traffic lap for the
Shobert/Quarterley duel. Shobert
would dive under Quarterley in turn
one, but the local would get it back in
turns two and three. On the last lap
Shobert did his heroic stuff pass in
turn eight and took the checkers in
third place. "I've never broke so hard
in my life," a happy Shobert told
Rainey. "The back wheel was up in
the air and everything."
Rainey threw his BeIr helmet into
the cheering crowd. Loudon was the
sight of Rainey's first Superbike win
(in 1982), but was also the track that
virtuaQy ended the L985 season for
him when he crashed in turn eight
and broke his elbow. "I wanted to get
a lead and go," Rainey said. "I was
detuned coming in because of last
year, but I just went out and raCC';d
and didn't worry about anything else."
Merkel said his'shock had seized on
lap five and he almost pulled in, but
"decided to nurse it in."
Shobert gave warning that, "I'll
get 'em back if they come race dirt,"
and later said about the pass on
Quanerley, "There had been a waving yellow in eight, but it wasn't
waving then and 1 went underneath
him."
