' McDermot sizZles in Firebird MX By Michael Ross CHANDLER, AZ, JUNE 7 David McDermot kicked off round one of the Summer Sizzler MX Series at Firebird Raceway by taking the 125cc Expert class overall win in the 125cc Expert cla.ss on his Honda CRl25, But moto one in the class belonged to Suzukimounted Curtis Culbert, who holeshot the start and opened up a substantial lead that carried him to the win. McDermot cruised to second with Mike McMullen taking'thenumber three spot on a Honda. The second moto saw McMullen fall in the first corner while Culbert gassed it up to take over and lead lap one, McDermot was pressuring Culbert and got by on the second lap when Culbert's front end washed out. McDermot went on to win easily over McMullen. The 125cc Amateur Stock class provided Firebird's enthusiastic spectators with some of the best racing of the night. Honda-mounted Billy Carlson took over the lead from Cass Morgan with a perfectly timed pass in the tricky rockers section. Carlson pulled steadily away from Morgan and had a nine-second advantage at the checkered flag. Jerry Stuart fell while dicing with Paul Reed and Reed took third. Carlson was skeptical about another runaway win: "Anybody can win this thing tonight. It's who gets the breaks and uses h is head." The breaks didn' I -come to Carlson in the second moto. Carlson holes hot the moto but fell while leading, leaving the door wide open for David Cowan. Cowan looked like a shoe-in for the win but Mike Bailey was charging hard and passed Cowan in the air at the checkered flag to take the win. Cowan's \-2 tally netted him the overall win. ~.
