otber in years, and all the riders
summed up the day as being plain
old fun. Current National motocross
competilOr JeH Hicks said, "If only
today's National motocrosses had an
atmosphere like this."
No mailer how much fun the
Champs of the Past riders were having in the pits, competition on the
track was as fierce as ever.
the first
Champs of the Past moto, Lackey
blasted his Kawasaki KX500 into the
lead with Pomeroy; riding a 560cc
ATK four-slTpke, quickly moving into
second, pressuring tbe leader. "Man,
1 flew past a couple of guys over this
jump; Lackey too. 1 yelled at him,
'Come on Brad, let's go, '" said Pomeroy later. But the chance for a Lackey/Pomeroy duel ended during the
First lap wben the rear hub on Pomeroy's borrowed ATK disintegrated.
Pomeroy, who drove £rom Alaska
(including all night prior to the race),
pushed .his bike back to the pits; two
laps later he had mounted another
wheel and was back out on the track.
Meanwhile, by the end of the first lap
it was Lackey leading, followed by
Grossi, Smith, former Mexican National Champion Randy Rodriguez
and Schultz. Jim Cooke, DeCoster,
Charles Holcomb, Hansen and Charlie Smart rounded out the top 10.
Shortly into the second lap of the
IO-lap race, Grossi slipped by Lackey
and began pulling away, while Smith
also started pressuring Lackey. A few
turns later, Lackey succumbed to
Smith's pressure and dropped back to
third, making it Grossi, Smith,
Lackey, Rodriguez, Schultz and DeCoster after the second lap.
By this time it was obvious that
Smith was the fastest rider on the
track. Once in second, Smith was
glued to Grossi's rear fender and
stayed there for the next two laps.
Then Smith made a daring, downhill
pass on Grossi and slOle the lead on
his KX250. Grossi, riding a Yamaha
YZ490, stayed close for the next few
laps, but Smith was still pulling
away sightly, During this time, a
close battle developed over third between Lackey, Rodgriquez and DeCoster, who was riding a Honda
CR250. As Rodriquez put it later, "I
was the center of a World Champion
sandwhich."
The battle lasted for the remainder
of the race with Lackey finishing in
third ahead of Rodriguez and DeCoster. Smith easily took the win, while
Grossi finished second.
The second molO again saw Lackey
jam into the lead after missing a firstturn pile up that lOok out a number
of riders, including Pomeroy. "I had
the holeshol." said Pomeroy, "but
everybody on the outside started to
funnel in on me. 1 had no choice but
10 lay it down when the rider next to
me ran into me. Some guy from
behind hit me and dug his fork into
my arm." Pomeroy walked away from
the wreck with a possible fractured
elbow. His brother Ron crashed in
the first molO and broke his collarbone.
Lackey's lead was short-lived, A
few turns into the race, Schul12 cruised
by Lackey, as did Grossi. However,
Schultz's lead was just as short as
Lackey's when Grossi stuffed his way
into the number one position. After
the end of the first lap it was Grossi,
Schultz, Lackey, Eierstedt, DeCoster,
Rodgriquez, Thordwaldson, Hanson,
John Savitski and Weinert rounding
out the lOp 10, Smith was 11th.
AI this point all eyes were focused
on DeCoster, who was closing in on
Eierstedt. DeCoster made his move
and took over fourth. then set after
Lackey. It was a classic bailie and the
crowd loved it. Lackey and DeCoster
ballied side- by-side for a n umber of
laps. DeEoster used ev,ery inch of the
