Kevin Atherton made his nine-hour trip from Wlllte Pigeon, Michigan, worthwhile as he completely dominated the 500cc Pro-Am class on his Wood-Rolax. Ricky Resweber took second over Tom Culshaw and Mark Hilts. Steve Champine, who had dominated the amateur dirt track scene in Wisconsin in the '70s, returned in style by winning the 750cc Pro-Am class over his long-time rival George Isrvanek. joe Houpt took third. Pingel, Sybert atDadeMX By Athie Sanders DADE CITY. FL, MAY 17 Kawasaki -mounted Jeff Pingel and Honda-mounted Chuck Sybert swept double moto wins at the seventh round of Dade City Raceway's 1986 Points Championship Series held in Dade City. Pingel also took the Open Novice overall win with a 4-1 moto wins. jeH Pingel nailed the holeshot in botA 250cc C class molOS, then rode out front all the way lo take the double mOlO wins. Todd Colbert was right behind Pingel in the beginning o[ both molOS. but was unable lo hold oU the advancing pack each time. Keith Westbrook came from out·of nowhere in molO one to dazzle the o·owd as he ate up the track and got close to Pingel. Pingel held on [or the will leaving the next four positions"to Westbrook, Fred Pree, Todd Williams and john Burger. At the end of moto one Westbrook said, "I got a bad start. The gate dropped early and I was orr guard. But I'm totally psyched up and ready to go for molO two. I've done some work on the bike this week and it is ready to move." InmolOtwoColbert, Williams and Pree were sandwiched between Pingel and Westbrook. Pingel poured on the power and stretched his lead to a comfortable eight seconds as Colbert dropped back. Westbrook'moved into third where Pree endoed off the doubles, then pushed hard and lOok W iIIiams moments before the finish line. Pingel, out of reach, took the easy win. Burger came across the line in founh, Colbert fifth. Chuck Sybert claimed the holeshot in the first 125cc B moto with Ricky Hampshire and George Bloise pushing him from behind. When Syben found Hampshire charging at his side he became-ungl ued long enough lo give away the lead. Hampshire took over, but gave it back lo Sybert in less than a lap when his bike slipped out from under him. Sybert got back in control then went in for the win with Hampshire, jeff Lampe, Bloise and Sam Plumb following. Lampe holeshot mow two with Sybert, Hampshire, Plumb and Bloise funneling in behind. Sybert lost no time taking over the lead and tretching it out. Lambe was left to battle with Hampshire as they rode side by side. Hampshire dove imo a turn ahead of Lampe lo take over second. Syben took it in for the easy win leaving second lo Hampshire, foHowed by Lampe, Bloise and Plumb. At the stan of the first Open Novice mow Kawasaki-mounted ScOlt Salkil had Mike Cook, Pingel, Tony Decosmo and Butch Benicki following close behind. Pingel got around Cook lo .the outside going over the camel backs. With less than a lap lo go Salkil was still in front, but Pingel was reeling him in. The frontrunner went down; causing a major upset. With Pingel hung up, Benicki pulled around the pile and cruised in for the win with Rudy Savelli taking a close second. Pingel and Salkil got back on the gas and followed David Marshall over the finish line in that order. Moto two was holeshot by Pingel. Salkil pulled into the lead when Pingel went down only to fall himself; giving the lead back lo Pingel. Pingel took I he win; his 4-! mow finish netted him first overall. Cook, mounted on a four-stroke, claimed second, but his 6-2 moto finishes was only good enough for fifth overall. Results PEE WEE STK: ,. ROnnie Renner(Yam); 2. Jarrett Tipping (Yam); 3. Friday night stadium motocross invaded Sacramento Raceway Park's Motobowl facility tonight and when it was over -jimmy "Kamikaze" Robertson had trounced the competition in me combined Pro class on his Honda CR250. In the first molO, Kawasaki-moumed Tom Sweeny worked his way into the lead on lap one and continued lo the checkered flag unchallenged. Robertson worked his way from a fifth place position up to second by molO'S end after displacing third place finisher Greg Sheehan late in the race. Honda-mounted Tom Odekurk and Greg Tirheimer rounded out the first five spots. The second molO was a whole new baUgame even though It Slarted much the same as the firsL Sweeney took control of the lead at the start with Greg Tirheimer and ScOlt McElroy dicing for second. Robertson began his charge through the pack, first passing McElroy and then in a tight left-hander Robertson dove under Tirheimer for second place; the pass left Tirheimer on the ground. Robertson set off after Sweeney and by the checkered flag had caught, passed and stretched a small lead over McElroy, who had in turn disposed o[ Sweeney. Roberts.on took the overall with Sweeney second and McElroy third. In 80cc Intermediate action, Ray Crumb proved that the new YZ80 is a real powerhouse as he roosted lo all four moto wins in both divisions. Brett HamillOn combined consistem rides for both second overall honors. Honda-mounted Darrel Baker aced the overall in the Division I 250cc Novice class ahead of Jeff "Bubble Man" Bublavi and Mike "Okay" Fine's Suzuki.
