A Belated Tribute to Our Best Riders of the 1985 Season Ryan dominates Say/ands Left to Right: Trophy Girl SHANNON MORGAN - CLIVE CHEFFINS (Ceet RlICing I.- KEN CAMPBELL - DAVE ATKINSON - BARB PERRY - LOUIS LESNIKOWSKI- JEFF LARSEN - By Mike Vancil FREMONT. CA. MAY 21 Total domination has not been so boldly demonstrated in the south bay as has been the command performan'ces put on by Rick Ryan, a Nationally-ranked motocrosser from San Jose. Again he won all six motos entered even though a pairof those wins came about while Ryan was riding an Open class ma- , chine borrowed from Fremont rider Tim Boone. Each moto gate saw him leap out into a two bikelength lead and neve, be pressured for the entire length of the moto. Of the six victories it appeared that if Ryan were to make a mistake in the 250cc class Jon Nelson would have immediately passed. In their second 250cc battle of the evening Nelson did a front flip after the stutter jumps and limped to the checkered flag in pain. In all. it was almost like a Rick Ryan motocross school; the professor was in fi ne form! In a mini drama within the l25cc Junior class ranks. a heavily entered class. Tyler Edwards could get no better than midpack starts. In the first moto he seemed to work backwards in places, caused by a minor get-off and being stuck behind stacked-up competitors; he finished 14th out of 16. However. in the second moto he began to put riders behind him and wound up first for the moto. This horrid and excellent combination of finishes gave Tyler a sixth place overall; Mike Seaver took the win in the class, Long time contender for Veteran Master honors at Baylands, Phil Cribnau surrendered toa runaway winner, Duane Hughes in the first moto. "Grib" hung tough and was able to figure the course better after watching H ughes'lines, braking and acceleration points. In their second moto it was Hughes again out in front. As the moto wore on Gribnau moved closer to Hughes back wheel and put _ together a late moto pass as the two were encountering some of the back' markers. Although started in sepa· rate gates, the Veteran Masters shared the track with Veteran Sportsmen riders. Gribnau's slick "sneak attack" completely caught Hughes off-guard and he could not get back to a faster fast lap to retake the lead. "Grib's" 2-1 finish record bested Hughes 1-2 record.
