VERNON, WA, JUNE I Spain's Jordi Tarres used a prototype Beta to score his first win in only his second year in World Championship competition, at the AMA/NATC Wagner Cup. Tom American was Bernie Schreiber, in eighth. Tarres, the 1982 European Bicycle Trials Champion, started riding (motorcycle) trials in 1984 and placed 11th in the 1985 World Championship standings. Currently in fifth, Tarres is also leading the Spanish Championship. In one of the closest battles for a world round, the top five were within 10 points of each other and six riders were challenging for the win going into the third loop. British Champion Saunders led the first lap, dropping 19, followed by Frenchman Phillip Bertatier with 20. Fantic's Michaud was one up on the battle for fourth between Lejeune and Tarres, each with 2!1. After the first seven sections, Lejeune had cleaned them all and looked mighty unbeatable. But a dismount at section 12 and a Laugh-In style calamity at section 15 added a quick 10 points to his card. Low point on loop two fell to jCM's Pascal Couturier. His 14 points moved him from eighth to fourth and in contention for the win. Saunders ~opped another 19 marks LO re~in In the lead, three upon Tarres. Apnllamounted Berlatier moved to third, one behind second. Dropping positions were Lejeune and Michaud in fifth and sixth. The top six covered a 10-point span. Diego Basis £rom Italy and Schreiber were tied with 54 for seventh. Tony Scarlet on a john Shirt TY250 carded 58, one more than fellow Yamaha rider Gilles Burgat, for ninth. Tarres secured his win by losing U on the final lap, posting a total of 54 with 25 cleans. Saunders dropped oU the pace the third time around but held onto second, scoring 59 and 26 cleans. Lejeune moved up two positions, losing second by one point. Posting the second-lowest score of 14 moved Michaud LO fourth with a 62. Couturier was pushed back one notch, two points behind Michaud for fifth. Berlatier's 26 was an anchor to his total of 68 that moved him from third to sixth. A tie for seventh was resolved on cleans; Basis claimed the position by one over former National and World Champion Schreiber. Moving. up three positions on each of his second and third loops gave ninth place to Team Fantic's Rena to Chiaberto. England's Scarlet finished 10th with a score of 87. At the halfway point in the schedule Mchaud still leads by seven over Lejeune. Saunders is still in contention with 85 points, in third place. Back another 19 points is Berlatier, folJowed by Tarres with 65. Pointwise, the Wagner Cup suited the World Championship riders quite well and the terrain kept them on their toes. • Results 1. VERNON, WA, MAY !II Cosmopolitan Motors' Scott Heat is threefifths of the way to his third consecutive AMA/NATC National Championship following a win at the Walker Valley OHV Park near Mt. Vernon. The victory increased P J 1/ AXO-sponsored Head's win streak to 15, and Head's confidence is growing with each event he wins. Head's Cosmopolitan MOLOrs teammates Ryan Young and Ron Comma filled out the top three. Seven of the LOp 10 were Beta-mounted. The course consisted of two I!Imile loops of 18 sections (16 sections for Support class riders) with a 4.5 time allotment granted riders_ The event was put on by the Pacific Northwest Trials Assn. (PNTA) and had riders challenged by stream beds, gooey mud, loamy din downhills, slick off-cambers and an occasional steep rock. For riders who though'! trials was for plonking, section eight offered a fourth-gear, lhrottle·full-on run up a two-story dirt bank. Head lost 12 marks on loop one to lead by seven over Ryan Young. Former Canadian Champion Bill Sparks lost one more than Young for third. Curt Comer filled the fourth spot while Ron Commo and Brad Sheen were tied for fifth. Five points separated second through seventh. Head scored another 12 marks to have a winning margin of 18. Young lost 2!1 to place second for the third consecutive time. Moving up to third with 23 dabs was Commo. Breaking up the Beta sweep of the top seven was Honda-mounted Don Sweet for fourth. Sweet ended a IO-year association with Cosmopolitan Motors with his switch LO the RTL250. Moving down to fifth was Comer, the 1981 National Champion. Sparks tied with Sweet at 46 but 1.6 time
