TEn YEARS AGO Tony DiStefano clinched the 250cc National Motocross Championship with a second-place finish behind Pierre Karsmakers in the sand at Motocross 338 Park in Southwick, Massachusetts. Karsmakers won both mOlOS with Bod Lackey taking second in the first molO while DiStefano took the runner-up spot in the second. Lackey ended up third overall with a 2-4 tally ahead of Kent Howerton and Bob Hannah. In the 500cc Support class, Rick Granville beat Chuck Sun and Michael Guerra. UP MORE RACI G FOR YOUR MONEYI <.0 00 0') ...... stars! Rookie Expert Steve 'Eklund became the eighth different rider in eight AMAlCamel Pro Series events 10 win a National. Eklund's shon track win came on the first day of racing under the roof of the Pontiac Silverdome near Detroit, Michigan. EkJund led all 20 laps to beat Randy Cleek and Jay Springsteen to the checkered flag. The second night of racing saw Ted Boody taking the win over Cleek and Steve Droste. The points standings for the Grana National Championship tightened considerably at the Pontiac event a Kenny Roberts led Rick Hocking and Gary Scott with only four points separating the three. Don Sweet won the opening round of the AMAINATC Trials Championship in Christmas Ranch, Colorado. Sweet, riding a Montesa 348 beat Marland Whaley and Lane Leavitt in . the rain-soaked event. The sixth round of the 500cc World Motocross Championship ended with Brad Lackey and Roger DeCoster each winning a moto in Finland. The overall win, however, went to Suzuki's Gerrit Wolsink. Larry Roescler won two Expert classes at the Viewfinders Grand Prix in Carlsbad, California. Roeseler took both the 250 and 500cc classes after beating Mike Stearns in the 250cc "class and Jim Connelly in the 500cc division. Local racing at Corona Raceway in Corona, California, saw Wayne Rai· ney and John Allison take home the wins in the shon track and half-mile races. Rainey won the short track after beating Eddie Lawson. In the half-mile event Allison led all 15 laps with Lawson again finishing second. The Trdsk Mountain Two-Day Trial in Oregon saw Jack Penton top the 250<:c class while taking the overall win. Second place went to 350<:c class winner, Carl Cranke.
