Ryan romps at Baylands MX By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, MAY 7 In keeping with his prior IO straight mota victories in two previous outings at Baylands Raceway Park, Rick Ryan u ed hi two Kawasaki mounts and a borrowed Honda to capture six more moto victories over impressive competition. His domination of late had not been objectionable even lO lhose he ha bealen for lhey each seem lO improve from walching his line, throltle and braking points. A rider school with no admission; jusl signup lO race and walch the show! The 125cc Pro motos saw Jon Nelson give Ryan some concern. Nelson fini hed econd in the firsl moto bUl did nOl el1ler tlle second. In the second 125cc Pro moto il was Breu Cahors chasi ng Ryan lO the checkers. Nine 250cc Pro class riders g'dled and when the gale dropped it was Bin Avery into the firsl corner first. Immedialely behind were John Daulh and Ryan. In one lap Ryan had lhe lead and began to strelch it. Dauth faded to ninth. with clutch problems bUl Avery hung in for a fourth place finish. Nelson worked lhrough traffic to take over second for good, midway throu~h the .moto. Halon his heels was Tony Richards, sponsored by 0' eal, MOlars Wesl Kawasaki/ Yamaha, and Maxey Enterprises. In the second moto, Richards gala better stan and was able to hang OntO Ryan for the entire mota. Dauth got his machine running better and foughl up lO lhird. elson did not enter the second moto. Open Pro cla s aClion saw Ryan on a borrowed Honda do ballle againsl lhe regular Open class Pros on their own familiar machines. It didn 'l make much difference as Ryan shot into lhe lead and never looked back. Olher class aClion saw little Kenny Spence Slay laugh in the 80cc (9-11 ) class for Beginners. He raced al lhe same lime as did the older Beginners (12-16) and was on the lrack and being passed by the firSl wave of 80ccJ un·iors. None of the action going on around him kepl him from his own line or his own pace. The final outcome was victory for Spence, bUl totally unexpected was the added prize he picked up. Larry and Eva mith of Cycle Man Accessories in nearby'Milpita announced that they were awarding a $25 gift cenificate to the winner of the 80cc Mini Novice class in the younger age group. Kenny had the biggesl smile of anyone at Baylands including big winner Ryan. ~ Results e PEE WEE: 1. Hecktor DeAnda (Yam). MINI BO BEG (12· 16): 1. John Peagler (Yam). MINI BO BEG (9·11): 1. King swift at CMC Baylands MARVIC By Mike Vancil FREMO T, CA, MAY 9 Jon Kingaboarda well-prepped Honda CR250 sponsored by Walnut Creek Honda, Circle Industries, Maxima and Malcolm Smith Products powered 10 an overall win in the Friday night CMC sanctioned MX at Baylands Raceway Park. It appeared at the out et of moto one that King's chief competilion would come from Johnny "Too Tall" Dauth. Daul11 chased King but could only occasionally draw within one bikelength. They finished lhe malO wilh thal as the margin of viclOry for King. In the econd malO, Dauth encoumered early problems when a foot peg fell off. Allhough he rode valiamly he could not be competitive. In fact, it was quite an achievement 10 finish with nowhere to hang a size large leg and bool. The early prowess of King began 10 fade as Brent Pallerson came from midpack, challenged and lhen took the lead away from Kingan the stuller jump. Unfortunately, for Pallerson his fir t malO fini;;h was insufficiemlO garner the overall. Much lO King's pleasure, the success of Patterson was 100 late and King won tbe overall by his first and second placings. Otller class action saw Mike Lane in the Veteran Masters class use a come-from-behind charge 10 get by early leader, and nearly back on form, Duane Hughe , who is sponsored by Command Smog Certifiers in San Jose. The racing between these two riders is always furious and clean for they are the best of friends. Lane' presem ability 10 win seems to be his conditioning. Hughes is just a few weeks back imo racing after a long layoff. 8 "Have you noticed wltich wheels the World Class teams are using?
