thefirst mota it appeared that Hughes' personal thorn-in-the-side, Mike Lane, was up 10 his old tricks of hanging back until he noted that Hughes was again tiring and then darting in for a quick pass a lap or so prior to the checkers. This time it didn't work; it has been taking longer each week for Lane to successfully pull-off lhis move. On the front straight and right afler a harsh landingoffa two-stage jump, Lane crashed while seemingly making thaI same familiar pass move on Hughes. Although he gOt up, the spill was obviously painful and stayed thaI way for the full evening. In mala twO Lane could only manage a fourth place. Hughes was on the gas hard, again look lhe holes hot off the stan, and began to stretch his lead over Phil Gribnau, a Redwood City Yamaha rider. Rick Ryan was up 10 his favorite trick of recent weeks which is 10 bring two Kawasakis, a KXI25anda KX250, and borrow a third machine that appears fast in practice. Armed with these weapons he has been able to capture all three Pro classes each time he has tried. Mosttrackside wags and Ryan fans lost track after about 16straight mota victories. On this particular evening Ryan borrowed Tim Boone's big-bore Honda CR and proceeded 10 win both Op n Pro molOS after being last due 10 a first corner judgement error. Danny Boles, on his Palo-Alto based YZ Yamaha, made. his first appearance al Baylands this year and for a time showed some of the same form and nerve he has been noted for. Boles used all of the first corner which included some of lhe terrain that Ryan had plans for. The results was that Ryan wentof[course and made the customary doughnut turn to get back all where he went off. Three laps later he was challenging Boles for the lead after systematicall y picking off the other four riders in the class. He won the second malO with no apparent trouble. Tony Richards, sponsored on his KX Kawasaki by Maxey Enterprises, Motors West Kawasaki/Yamaha and 0' eal, cou ld get close but was not offered the luxury of space to pass. Richards' two second placings gave him second overall. Added nice touches' for the evenings saw the winner of the Pee Wee program, little Nick Pappas of Fremonl, pick up a Mota World ite Shirt (it would be a T-shin if Nick were bigger) and all the other riders in the class getting a handful of decals from the MaLO World people who just opened business in San Lorenzo. Also, Rusty Rust was a surprise recipient of a contingency gifl. Rusty finished just out of the trophy category but did receive a $25 value Race Preparation Kit from ~he PJI Race Team Co-ordinator and the Pit SLOp Accessory Shop in Hollister. Results PEE WEE: 1.
