fiY p~p~ Wf~LfY Team Marlboro Vamaha's Eddie Lawson won the West German 500cc Road Race Grand Prix at the Nurburgring on May 25. beating Rothmans Honda's Wayne Gardner and Team Lucky Strike Roberts' Vamaha-mounted Mike Baldwin. Lawson's teammate, Rob McElnea, wa. fourth, with Didier de Radigues fifth and Team Lucky Strike Roberts' Rand.y Mamola sixth; Mamola was left behind on the starting grid when his Vamaha V-four wouldn't start. Christian Sarron was second in the 600cc race until he crashed on the nextto-last lap. cracking a bone in one foot. Carlos Lavado won the 250cc race on a Vamaha, with Toni Mang second on a Honda ahead ofVamaha-mounted Martin Wimmer. Reigning 250 and 500cc World Champion Freddie Spencer appeared at a press conference at the track but did not race; Spencer is having problems with his right wrist and arm. Jeff Morrow and Keith Pinkstaff topped their respectivedivi ion during Suzuki GSXR Cup Series competition Sunday at Portland International Raceway in Oregon. Morrow won the 750cc Production race, beating Chuck Wiley and Brian Morgan. Keith Pinkstaff took the win in the Open Production division. followed by Morrow, Wiley and Dale Quanerley. The Honda Interceptor 500 Series round was topped by Mike Johnson, who was followed home by Scon Moon. Robert Schu.£f, Steve Sipes and Rich Wascher. Terry Cunningham edged fellow factory Husqvarna rider Randy Hawkins by one point. 10-11, to win the Red Neck National Enduro Sunday May 25 in Saline. Louisiana. KTM-mounted Kevin Hines finished third, with 13 points. The win unofficially tied Cunningham with Hines in the National Enduro Championship points standings. George Roeder Jr. topped the Expert cia s at the May 26 AMA Eastern Regional Championship Half Mile in. York, Pennsylvania. Chris Evans (H-D) was second, with Honda rider Rod Farris third. The Junior win fell to Wood-Rotax rider Les Washbon, while Scott Stump put his Harley on top of the Pro-Am division. 2 Vamaha-mounted Ross Pederson won the May 23 Montreal (Canada) Supercross over Allan Dyck and Honda pilot Guy Cooper, before 35,000 spectators. On May 24, the second night of the doubleheader, 53,000 fans watched Dyck (Vam) defeat Pederson and Cooper. Husqvarna rider Dan Smith continued his domination of the National Hare & Hound Championship Series by winning round five on May 25, the Cherry Creek Hare & Hound in Delta, Utah. Open-clas"s riders Dan Ashcraft (Hus), Shawn Gerber (KTM), Brad Strong (Hus) and Mark Lundgren (Hon) rounded out the LOp five overall. Suzuki-mounted Paul Krause won the 250cc class, while Duane Summers put his Cagiva at the LOp of the 125s [or the fifth consecutive time. Doug Polen won the 750cc Production and Open Production races, rounds of the Suzuki GSXR Cup Series, at an AFM race held at Willow Springs International Raceway in Rosamond, California on May 25, but was disqualified from the 750cc class for using nonstock (stainless steel) brake lines. Doug Toland finished second in both classes but was awarded the 750cc points, with local ace Richard Moore finishing third but being credited with second in the 750cc class and Chris Stewart third in the Open class. all on Suzukis. Billy DeBere continued to ravage the Honda VF600F Interceptor class, with Moore second, Joe Solis third and Polen fourth. Toland topped Toyotal Budweiser 1 Coca-Cola Formula USA action on a Suzuki with Jim Vreeke second on a Vamaha and Earl Roloff third on a Kawa..ki. Vreeke was first in the Kerker Superbike class, ahead of Jeff Stem (Suz). World Speedway Championship contender and 1984-1985 British Speedway Champion Kenny Carter, 25, killed his wife, Pamela, 25, and himself on Wednesday night, May 21 at their home in England. The murder/ suicide, thought to be the result of a domestic argument, left the couple's two children, four-year-old Kelly Marie and two-year-old Malcolm, unhurt. Mark Melton and Ken Bollrneier topped the featured 125cc A and 250cc A classes, respectively, at the AMA-SlInctioned North American Spring Marathon MX Championships held in Terre Haute, Indiana over the Memorial Day Weekend. Melton rode a Honda and Bollmeier rode a Vamaha to victory on the treck. which was turned into a mudbog by torrential rainfall immedia~elypreceeding the racing. The AMA is combining points earned in the Formula One and Superbike classes and will crown one Camel Pro Series Road Racing Champion in 1986, and road racing points won't be included in calculating the Camel Pro Series Grand National (dirt track) champion. Under the system, a rider may enter both road racing classes on a given weekend, but only his best finish counts. The 1986 NMA/Vamaha National Championship Series motocrpss originally scheduled for Santa Maria, California on June 15 has been cancelled. Instead, the series will run an event at L.A. Support continues to roll in Lor the Magoa Invitational Motocross, a benefit event for inj ured motocrosser Danny "Magoo" Chandler scheduled for the Prairie City OHV Park near acramento, California on June 1415. Latest motocro s veterans to sign up for the event include Steve Wise, Buck Murphy and Tim Han, and the latest co-sponsor is Coors. In addition, benefit organizer Michael Collins says that nearby motocross tracks have agreed LO cancel competing events scbeduled for the June 14-15 weekend; according LO Collins, cancelling tracks include those in Hollister, Metcalf, Watsonville, Marysville, Santa Clara and Sand Hill Ranch (Br.entwood) in California, and the Fernly and Stead tracks in Nevada. British motorcycle journalist Alan Cathcart will ride the Dr. John's Team Moto Guzzi LeMans1 000 in the June 6 Isle of Man Senior TT. Preparation for the event has kept team founder and owner Dr. John Wittner away from AMA/MotoWorld U.S. Endurance Championship rounds; the team won the series title in 1985. A poster currently being circulated by the U.S. Marine Cprps shows a crashed motorcycle with an ambulance and a police officer in the background, and says, "He did everything RIGHT ... Learned and practiced the rules of mOLOrcycle safety. Wore a hel met and protective clothing. Obeyed posted speed limits. K.new the roadway ... But it all went WRONG." The poster goes on to say thata21-year-oldservicernan " ... lost control while rounding a turn. The front tire hit a soft groove between the lanes. He was killed when his cycle crashed through a fence." The poster concludes "A Motorcyclist'S Safety Is Ultimately Out. Of His Hands." The poster does nOl explain what the rider in question was doing with his front wheel between lanes mid-LUrn. The May 24-26 NHRA Cajun Nationals drag race in Baton Rouge. Louisiana, including Pro Stock motorcycle action. was rained out; before rain halted the proceedings, Terry Vance set a new c1... elapsed time record at 8.16 seconds, backed up by a 8.16. The old record, also held by Vance, was 8.19 seconds. The race has been rescheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 6-7 at Stete Capitol Dragway in Beton Rouge. Ironbun competitor Suzie Mann lost a cusLOm-made, blue-with-white-trim Harro leather jacket at the May 25 Camel Pro Series Springfield Mile. Mann left the jacket in the pit-area ladies' room and is offering a reward for its return; Mann can be contacted at 800/245-7866. Camel Pro Series half-mile dirt track recing will return to Oklahoma Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on July 6, after an eight-year absence. The event, promoted by 19B1 AMA Grand National Champion Mike Kidd, will include a poker run starting in TulSll, Oklahoma and Decatur, Texas; first prize in the poker run will be a 600cc street bike. The Ryan Remsing Memorial Motocross scheduled for Woodside Motocross Raceway in Sandpoint, Idaho on July 27 will see all proceeds going to the National Head Injury Foundation, according to event organizer Rick Remsing, Chairman of the Ryan Remsing Memorial Fund. Ryan Remsing, age II, died of head inj uries sustained while practicing for a race late last year. Rick Remsing is his father. More information is available from Rick Remsing at 509/448-5025. Consider, [or example, the AMA Camel Pro Series, the CMC Skoal Bandit Series and the World Championship Grand Prix teams funded by Rothmans, Marlboro, Lucky Strike, HB and others.
