Race Place MX :I: By Brad and Sharon Jones CHAPMAN, KS, MAY II Former Race Place promoter Frank Royse scored a hard fought victory in the combined 250cc/Open Novice class. After Doug Polen (296) leads Dewayne Davis (668) and Wesley Winchester (27) at the start of the CRRC B Production race at Green Valley. son entry to the last heat win over a fast-closing Kid Curry, pressed hard by Pat Linn. . Houston rocketed the first semi start, took over within a lap and then gota pressing (rom Bast and Yarrow, who narrowed the gap but no pass for the main. It was Sisemore once again dominant in the other semi over Linn and Curry. Ingels struggled with the outside for a fourth and the consolation. Houston was the low-yardage guy in the main and went right for the spot. He was challenged by Yarrow right at the end but had things in hand for the win while Bast had hi troubles, recovering nicely for third over Curry. Sisemore started from outside to inside and was going for Houston on the second lap when he got under and had to throw it away to save both, unhappy about the line taken by Houston. The first Scratch heat was a thriller with Steve Martin trying the outside, much to thedelight of the crowd, but not making the transfer when he gOt too wide and smacked the fence a tad. Sisemore was once again dominant with Linn Petrich second. Teenager Bast took a big secopd-heat win over Chris Paulson while Ingels and Yarrow put on a classic speedway duel for first in the third heat. Kid Curry gated on Houston [or the fourth heat win. The first semi was an ab olute thriller with Houston, Yarrow, Bast and Sisemore set early. Bast got the war t of the sandwiching in the first turn while it was Sisemore and the Truman Bailey Weslakes out front for the distance with Yarrow riding wide and then closing inside for thetransfer. Ingels rode the rim line once again for the start of tbe second emi, bringing everyone to their feet, and then sellled in ide for the big-time win over Linn. Ingels utilized much of the British league training in getting a great start for the main and despite immense pressure from Sisemore held the point and his second straight win at Baylands. Yarrow took the tbird over Linn and continues to show why he is always in the point run. Manin met up with young Bast in the fea tured Match race and won the opening of three with a fine outside ride, but Bast took the next two and continues to show the stuff that made the family name famous. Polen's record at Green Valley RR By Scott Schaefer NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TX, MAY II The Centra] Road Racing Club held its last-ever race at Green Valley Raceway on a day that saw several upsets and'a new track record set for posterity. The facility will soon be torn down to make way for new sulxlivisions. Doug Polen set down the new low lap time on his Suzuki GSXRllOO in Formula 1, turning a I-minute, 8.33-second lap on the tight, 1.5-mile track. The previous lap record was set last year by Kevin Schwamz on a Kawasaki GPz750 Superbike at 1:10.43. The race day started with the growing combined Clubman and Vintage class. Seth Avant, who has been taming the class at the two previous races th'is year, had newfound competition with jeff Berglund joining the fray on a hybrid consisting of a Honda Hawk frame and an Ascot thumper motor. jack Geiseke came out of semi-retirement on his own hybrid, a Yamaha TZ250 motor in an RD frame. When the race began, it looked like Berglund would havean easy goat it. By the third lap, he had a fi ve-second lead over Geiseke, with Avant right behind him. Then there was a crash in the turn leading onto the front half-mile straight and the ra e was topped with four laps completed so the ambulance could enter the track. After a 10-minute delay, the riders were lined up single file and restarted. This time the pack held much closer LOgether and a variety of machines were in the hunt. Among the riders bunched together going inLO the first turn were Berglund, Geiseke and Avant. Berglund continued LO lead but hi margin over second was much clo er than the fir t time around. He eventually won by about four seconds with Geiseke and Avant close behind. .Polen took time off from his regular job of collecting Suzuki and Honda contingency money LO thrill his home crowd. Although Polen lives in nearby Dallas, he had never ridden at Green Valley before. As he sat in his spiffy new leathers (the first new one in six years) awaiting the first practice session, his team captain asked him if Novice Alan Spears could follow him around the track to pick up some pointers. "Sure he can," said Polen, "but since I've never been on this track before, maybe I should follow him for awhile." Greg Zitterkopf topped the 250cc Pros at CRC's Glen Helen MX. Nevertheless, Polen wem on to scorch the competition in the B Superbike, A Superbike and Formula One classes on his brace of Suzukis. The Formula classes have suffered this year at the resurgence of Production class racing, but this meet saw lots of entries in the Formula One class and close action in both the Formula Two and Three divisions. The GSSXRllOOs of Polen and Mau Maschmann took first and second and the Yamaha FZ750s of Dewayne Davis and Lloyd Olson took third and fourth .. First Novice was Spears on a Yamaha Fjl 100 and second was David Finley on a Suzuki. George Wallace and his Yamaha TZ250 sat on the pole for the Formula Two race. Kevin Stasney had the only other TZ on the outside of the front row. Ivan Faroh and his Ducati F-I were on the grid, and Avant, Berglund and Fisher brought their thumpers to the line. When the flag dropped, Stasney was dead on the line with a fouled plug. Faroh and Berglund bumped in turn three on one of the early laps and Faroh went down unhun. Wallace opened up a big lead and won by at least 15 seconds, turning I: 16s in the process. Berglund went on LO finish second, with Avant and Fisher following. Results CLBMN EX: 1. Now Frank is enjoying getting a little racing in for a change. The first moto began with jim Velk leading the pack with Royse, Tom Evler and Wayne Hall following. Evler nailed both Royse and Velk by the halfway poim. Royse also slipped by Velk shortly after Evler did. On the last lap, Evler got sideways in the whoops and crashed bard, dropping to seventh place. Velk charged hard on Royse for a near phOLO finish with Royse taking the wm. In moLO two, Velk took the holeshot with Royse in second. It was a two-man show as Velk and Royse ran away from the pack. Velk led all the way to the final lap, when Royse berserked it through a muddy berm and slammed into Velk. Royse got a slightly better drive in the next whoop-de-doo section to take the lead and the win. Sheldon Ouo topped a talemed field of Over 30 class riders, including the likes of 1969 State Champion Gene "cz" Enberg and early '70's super pro Gary Wilt, to cart home first place gold. Otto, a champ himself, had complete control of the first maLO, while Enberg and Will fought over second. Wilt made his move and slid by Enberg for a solid second. In moto twO, Otto got the holeshot again, onl y to fall three turns later. Enberg LOok over the lead with Will only a few seconds behind. Ouo got going again and reeled in the leaders. On the last lap, OllO passed Will, then closed in on Enberg. The checkered flag fell and Enberg got the win, but the overall vicLOry went to OllO with a 1-2 tally. ln the 125cc ovice class, SCOll Martin pulled the holeshot, but was soon aced out by Kevin Callahan and Michael Wasina in the doubles. Callahan stretched his lead LO take the wm. In the second moto,1 it was Wasina on the start with Darnell Pruilt and Callahan in LOW. Callahan found an opening and blasted by pruill on lap two. By then, Wasina had a sizable lead, but Callahan reeled him in when Wasina suddenly hit the dirt. Callahan went on LO win while Wasina got going again in second. Pruill got by the now-tired Wasina on the last lap LO take second. Tom Smith was also charging and passed Wasina for third in the final turn. Results JR; 1. Brian Deegan (Kaw); 2.
