Honda-mounted Dan Berg bested all comers to take top honors in the 500cc Pro division. Ken Zahrt grabbed his usual holeshot in the first 250 molO, with Gary Sailors and Tony Spear close in lOw. By the end of lap one, Zahrt - who was riding a Honda sporting his own· KZ suspension - had three seconds over second-place Spear, while Zitterkopf, running in mid-pack, settled down to make a charge through traffic. It took Suzuki Country/Norcosponsored Spear five laps to get close enough 10 auempt a pass on Zahrt; in the meantime, Frankie Brundage moved into third and was closing on Spear. Zahrt lost his front bake and began 10 fade. Spear caught him at the mudhole turn, and cut an inside pas for the lead. When BruJ'!dage stumbled, H-T Racing-sponsored Zitterkopf hopped his Honda into third and went to work on Zahrt. Zahn let Ziuerkopf by and continued to fade, eventually slipping 10 fourth by the flag. Ziuerkopf clo ed on Spear and justmi sed passing him at the checkered flag. Brundage finished third. Chris Lance grabbed the lead at the beginning of moto two, foll.owed by Zi tterkopf, Spear and Zahn. Ziuerkopf, who elbowed his way into the lead on lap two, seemed a sure winner. •. Spear tried 10 put a move on Lance, but blew a turn and Zahn zipped by. Lance began to fade, while Zahn caught his second wind and began closing fast on the distant Zitterkopf. By the eighth lap, the two Zs were zooming around only inches apan. Zahn passed Zillerkopf in the middle of the lap, and when the duo took the white flag Zillerkopf began a successful charge for first - He nipped Zahrt in the last turn and won the molO by inches. Zitterkopf took the overall win (2- I), second overall went 10 Spear (1-4), and Zahn (4-2) was third for the day. Zitterkopf was back in action for the combined 500cc Intermediate/Pro race. He took the holes hot in the first moto with Intermediate Ray Groom running at his side. Zillerkopf moved into the lead and was building a substantial margin when his bike gave up for good. Berg, sponsored by Suzuki City/Power Pros/Enzo Racing, worked his Honda into the lead and held on for the win. Mike Watson finished second. Ziuerkopf was repaired and back for molO two. He and Groom were so close at the stan of the race that they got in each others way, letting Mike Watson come out of turn one with the lead. Zitterkopf regained the lead on lap two and went on 10 take the checkers, but his pNF in the first molO dropped him to fifth overall. Watson, sponsored by Answer/Silkolen/Simi Honda, went down briefly at the end of turn four, leuing Berg by. Berg lOok second in the molO to earn the overall win; Watson took second overall money.
