Ascot South Bay Stadium Handicap main winner Rich Sweaney leads Costa Mesa Scratch main vietor Brad Oxley at Ascot. Faria flies at Speedway USA By Scott Daloisio VICTORVILLE, CA, MAY 17 After a two-week layoff, "Flyin' Mike" Faria returned to victory circle after the Scratch main at Speedway USA on a warm Sat- 26 urday night. The weather was perfect at the newest speedway venue in America. The temperature was wann, there was no wind and a fine crowd gathered to watch some very intense speedway action. . Faria, sponsored by Shoei/J/Oak· ley/George Wenn/Carlisle Tires/ Cody Products/Oilzall/Tsubaki/Hi· Point/Kal-Gard on a Jawa had his work more than cutout for him as he lined up against Steve Lucero. Gene Woods and John Sandona. who had taken the Scratch main the previous two weeks. Woods was first out of the gate but Faria raced around the outside of him before they went down the back chute on the very fin lap. Lucero also got Woods and began to hunt down Faria, but Faria never made a single bobble. Sandona also got by Woods and then the lauer pulled to (he infield with a blown gasket on his GM machine. Lucero was hot after Faria when Faria bobbled on the last bend, al 0 making Lucero momentarily slow. At the checkered it was Faria with Lucero breathing down his neck while Sandona was a distant third. Louis Kossuth won the Handicap main for the third week in a row after staning on the 20-yard line. Greg Ayers staned on the 10 and was the initial leader but Kossuth and Jeff Johnson quickly made their way past him with Kossuth powering by for the lead. Once out front Kossuth. on a NJKlLou's Service/Smith Gogglessponsored Weslake, turned it on. Johnson and Ayers, though, had their hands full as Warren Diem, Ronnie Correy and Faria applied the heat. Correy and Diem made their way past Ayers on the second lap with Die\", riding in crowd-pleasing fashion, moving into the runner-up spot. Diem was unable to close on the leader but he had a challenge coming up.from behind in the likes of Correy. Kossuth took the win by a good margin with Kossuth edging Correy by a tire knob for second. Correy's lillIe brother, SCOll. fared a little beuer when he posted the win in Second Division. Correy came 0([ (he zero and yanked the win in stylish manner over hot running Steve Donovan and Kevin Krugh. Jim Blan and his Jawa came home with his second win of the week when he blazed to the Third Division win. Keith Rylance Jr. came home second in the thrilling four lap affair witb elson Coleman third. Oxley tops at O.C. speedway By Scott Daloisio COSTA MESA, CA, MAY 16 "Rad Brad" Oxley became the first rider of the 1986 season to capture two Scratch main events at the famed dirt oval on the Orange County Fairgrounds. Oxley £aced a stiff field of competition in the main when he had to face defending National Champion Alan "Crazy" Christian, current number three in the World "Sudden" Sam Ermolenko and 1985 American Final Champion John Cook. Oxley. sponsored by Coors/KNAC FM/Cirello Racing/Hallman/Silkolene/Simpson/Scott Goggles on a Weslake, is in the midst of his best season in a long time. He more than proved that Friday with his popular win in front of a large crowd. The race was red-flagged on the first go when all of the riders took a soil sample. On the restart, Cook was the first to react to the rise of the tapes but Oxley had the lead bagged by the first bend. Christian also got past Cook and almost charged by Oxley at the end of the first revolution but the lanky leader maintained his advantage. From that point on Oxley began to lengthen it out while the other three racers bauled behind. In the end it was Oxley by some five lengths with Christian taking the number two spot ahead of Ermolenko and Cook. The Handicap main event was all Ronnie Correy's as he maintained a lead all the way to the Jerry Kingwaved checkered flag. All of the riders were staning on the 30 or fanher back. Oxley and Steve Lucero occupied second and third at tbe stan bu( Ermolenko quickly moved into the third spot. Ermolenko then put some intense pressure on Oxley while Correy was breezing at the bead of the pack. Ermolenko was trying hard on the inside and was actually hanging his front tire over tbe infield pipe but he swapped at the end of the third circuit and dropped back. Correy, on the other hand, was perfect at the head of the pack and garnered a good paying win over Oxley and Ermolenko. Steve Donovan hammered home a win in the Second Division feature race. Mark Brooks was second behind the fast-flying Donovan while former British rider Chris Chaplin, who applied a lot of heat to Donovan early in the race, took third. Sean Diullo won his second main event in two nights in the Division Three main event. Kurt Markham was second for the second consecutive night to Diullo (the previous night they were in Second Division) with Rod Saunders third. Results SCRATCH: ,. Bred Oxley (Wes); 2. Errnolenko, who finished second to "F1yio' Mike" Faria the previous Thursday, was definitely puuing the horsepower to the ground as he won two of his three Scratch rides. His only setback was at the hands of Robert Pfetzing in their Scratch semi. In the main, Pick Your Part/Cal. Mini Trucks/Frame Shop/Arai/ Jones Goggles/STP/KaI-GardlQ&:Esponsored Errnolenko started from the notorious number three spot and got the gate over Pfetzing, Brad Oxley and Mike Faria. P(etzing maintained second until the end o( the first lap when Oxley shot by and took up chasing Ermolenkoand his Weslake. Faria got by PfelZing on the next circuit butthat is as far as he got. Ermolenko had it set and was definitely dialed into the track. Oxley was close all the way but in the end had to sellie for second behind Ermolenko, a rider for the English team the Wolverhampton Wolves. Faria, coming off last week's win, tallied third on wha has proved to be the bogey track her, in 1986. Pfetzing took fourth whil, seeming ontent with doing wheelie for the crowd.
