Cahors, Joos .shine at Baylands By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, APR. 25 In the inaugural Continental MotospoftS Club (CMC)-sanctioned Friday night motocross program at Baylands it was Brett Cahors and his Honda sharing honors with Devon Joos' Yamaha. For Devon it was a great beginning as he combined his first Baylands 1986 250cc Pro win with his first serious outing this year on the O'Neal USA, Team U.S. and Kenny Roberts Yamahasponsored YZ. The best individual performance Devon could muster-was a second plaq:. but hedid it twice and ~the LOtal of four points bested everyone else in his class. In the first moto Tony Richards and his KX Kawasaki gOt away first and led for two laps before being reeled-in 'by first Cahors and then three others. The first moLO was not one Richards was proud of, but he gave his sponsors something LO be proud of later. Meanwhile, Cahors and his Hi-Point and Marin Motorspons-sponsored CR w.ere enjoying a great first moLO. The gearing on 'his mount was choice for the new high speed (LOp gear) straight built into the LOugh .Baylands course. Joos battled with Honda-mounted Johnny "Too Tall" Dauth of San Jose for the entire distance and held a slight advantage as they crossed the finish line. In the second moLO an inspired Richards took his Maxey Enterprises, O'Neal USA and Motors West Kawasaki KX into an early lead. His ride _ would have to be termed inspired as he made no mistakes and no other rider seemed capable of matching his speed around the approximate onemile-long course. Cahors and Joos baltled fora bitoversecond place. but a bobble by Cahors gave Joos the advantage with too lillIe of the moLO left for Cahors LO capitalize. The two second places gave Joos the overall and permilled Cahors to finish second in the pay-out line. Open class Pro action was equal to, if not belter, than the 250cc segment. The higher speeds of the Open class bikes on the new Baylands course was a spectacular treat for the assem· bled spectaLOrs a,ud other class racers. The show down came down to Tony Richards and his big bore KX and Brett Cahors' large CR. Although Cahors won both moLOS hedid notdo so without serious concern for Richards, who was on his rear fender the entire distance. Both riders pulled far away from the remainder of the field. Joos hung onto third in each outing. The overall results gave Cahors top dollar by virtue of his winning both moLOS and Richards second through two second place finis·hes. Results MINI NOV (9-11): 1.
