Keith Watson competed in all
three Pro classes today at the
Pepsi Eastern Continental
Championship at Muddy Creek
The 15th consecutive season of
short track racing got underway at Virginia State Fairgrounds with a crowd of 1400
racing fans watching 76 racers from
Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina got at it. The quarter-mile clay
oval was in perfect condition and was
dust free throughout Lhe program.
David uckols made his dehut in
Lhe motorcycle classes after having
completed in Lhe minibike ranks in
prior seasons. Nuckols served notice
on his competitors Lhat he'll be hard
to handle_ His first win came in the
I25cc class where, after finishing Lhird
in both qualifying heaLs, he won Lhe
final. Defending track champ Wayne
Eckert won both heat races but finished third behind
uckols and
Mickey Turner in Lhe main.
Nuckols came back in Lhe 250cc
Amateur class and rode his Bultaco to
a -win in Lhe qualifier after Glenn
Baar went down heading for the finish ine. In the feature, Chris Rickman led off the line but Baar swept to
the outside on Lhe Lhird lap, took the
lead and went on to win going away.
Rickman and Nuckols raced hard for
second with Rickman claiming that
spot at the finish.
Baar came back strong in the 500cc
Amateur class as he won his heat over
Rickman and Jerry Koris. Baar then
led off Lhe line in the main and
alLhough Alfred Ledbetter and Koris
hounded him for three laps, the race
was totally his. As Baar pulled away
for Lhe win, Koris settled into second
MX and went home wiLh a big chunk
of the $5000 purse. At the end of Lhe
day, Watson had two moto wins, two
seconds, and a fourth.
The event drew riders from Michigan to Florida. RPS, Boyesen Reeds,
Wi eco, Smith Goggles, Dunlop, HiPoint, Bel Ray and Autolite provided
prizes for the riders to make winning
evem more beneficial. Amateur rider
Kenny Kizzar won his share of Lhe
prizes as he topped the 125 and 250cc
B classes.
The day began wiLh Tennessee's
Chris Brewer getting the holeshot in
the first moto of the l25cc Pro class.
Ohio's Todd Poling started second.
followed by Eddie Branch. Brewer
pulled a few bikeIengLhs ahead and
Branch passed Poling. Before the end
of lap one, Branch's bike seized. Poling then ran second, three seconds
behind Brewer, and Larry Andrews
was closing in third. By the halfway
point, Keith Watson had charged to
third, followed by Mike ]olinson.
Brewer, on his Atlas Honda-sponsored
Honda, continued his blistering pace
to win Lhe moto. Watson charged to
the end and finished second in front
of Poling.
Team Green rider Chris Stanick
led Lhe second mow, followed initially
by Watson, but Watson fell on the
first lap and left Florida's Keith Fox a
