Old Timers A winner Dan War- . ley broke up the predominantly Yamaha top 10 brigade on his Husky with seventh ' overalL Mike Smith : totall y smoked Old Timers B class, as well as takin~ ninth at 7.420. Smith's main com pe tition , fast ri sin g Jordan Chaney , was shunted several times by an earlier rid er , a nd a burned check. Chaney ended with a 9.455, 2Sth overall . At S.S mil es, a 36 mph speed made it hard to see th e beautiful huge rock formations th e co u rse wound through , a nd th e II .S-mile checko u t found most rid ers late. The tak e-up section followin g dropped to 24 mph and three co nsecu tive resets a llowed riders to both stay on time and enjoy a putt through Lucerne Sandwash across the Great Mohave 250 off-road course for most of 22 mil es. After skirting Anderson Dry Lake, the Mike Shet ler-designed co urse punched riders in the seco nd Special a t 33.S miles. It turned o u t to be a ra ce to th e finish, with many C and other riders lat e. Loop o ne included four ch ecks, two Speci als a nd one tiebreak er chec k. The Famil y loop found a n ew set o f winners thi s time , with Yamahamounted J oe Loker taking both th e o vera ll , and th e I25cc C-16 class wins. KXSO-mounted Chris Anderson aga in took th e SOcc C class, and moved up three spots to seco nd o vera ll. Hapner rode hi s YZSO into th e SOcc A win , followed by Kevin Cl eveland. Sixteenyea r-old Lori Boretree aga in won th e Women C class o n her SOcc Suzuki, rounding out th e top five. After a 31 minute break , loop two Iunnel led rid ers through th e Yamaha start ch ute down Waterfall Slide and into th e 36 mph special test through Cougar Butte rock pile co u ntry. Checkou t came at 4.2 mil es , follow ed by a healt hy 10minute reset at 4.S miles. Other than the dust, not a single negative com ment was turned ill to th is reporter. Holcomb stated. "The 36 mph sect ions were very challe ng ing, a nd th e IS mph pi ece in loop two was perfect. I got a rear nat in loop one, a nd th e sta rts -im med ia tely off the pits helped me get ba ck quickl y. The luscious girls a t chec k nine were o u tragious, Good thing I zeroed !" Formerly X R350 Honda-mounted Steve H ammer , now a B Vet and Huskymounted, sa id , " My ado broke a nd I wa s one and half minutes late to stan loop two a fter half-time, but that Husky doesn't hold you back in the whoops. Despite my problems, it was lots of fun a nd a nice ride." In addition to the well-liked new pit area, a big h it was the serpentine first special test of loop two.
