Kawasaki-mou n ted Washburn didn 't ha ve a n easy tim e of it in moto one; h e started in 12th pos ition. Out front wi th th e ea rly lead was Ra y Grossaint . '(H on da ), followed by Da ve Yardas (Yama ha) , an d T on y Martin (H onda) . Washburn went wild. p icking off . several riders in th e fir st few turns, a nd th en h e flew by almos t everyo ne on the fa st u p h ill section . Going d o wn h ill , to ward th e west-end whoops. Washburn double-jumped the seco nd set. and flew by Grossaint for th e lead. On lap two J eff La ncaster - mov ed into fourth but it was short lived ; he fell an d ended up in last. Severa l positions cha nged, but th e front five were locked in . At th e ch ec ke re d flag it wa s Washburn . Grossaint, Yardas , Martin ..and Westla ke. G ett in g th e holeshot in the final moto was Carl Waddington , followed by Orossairu. Lancaster, Wa shburn a nd th e rest of th e big bore ground pounders. Within a lap and a half, Washburn h ad again passed everyone to take the lead. Waddington almost; lost it. but recovered and en ded up in fifth. Meanwhile Bill Waring was on the mo ve. By lap three h e was up to fifth , and on th e wh ite flag lap he sq u eezed into fourth . At th e end, it was Wa shburn. Crossainr. Lancaster, Waring, a nd Westlake. On lap two , H ilt on m oved past Grossaint and ca ught Syri ng. T he two of th em rode side-by-side for q u ite a wh ile, befor e Grossai n t came u p to make it a th ree-a bread race. The trio remai n ed close clear to th e ta ble top jump in front of th e sco ring tower. From th ere, th ey stru ng o u t single file with Syring aga in in th e lead . Meanwhi le Brian Bu rn side of Mike's Suzu ki pa ssed Jeff Dick in the ai r wh ile going over th e tab le top jump. Also m oving u p was Da n Fisher o f Countryside Honda . With on e la p to go H ilto n moved u nder Syring a nd tried to get by; there was n ' t enough room and H ilton a lm ost h igh-sided. He q ui ckl y recovered without losin g a pos ition. At the flag it was Syring, H ilton . Grossaint, Eaves, a nd Burnside . In moto two , G rossa int took the ea rly lead a nd bu ilt a 25-ya rd advant age over Syri ng a n d th e o the rs. How ever, whe n h e h it the step- up j u m p close to th e start -finis h lin e h is back en d kicked up and sent h im over th e ba rs. H e fin all y ca me to rest on th e ou tside o f th e left -h ander, Former Oregon Sta te BMX cha mpion Brian Burnside was duel in g it ou t with Chris Clark , a lso a con verte d BMXer. Both hi t th e to wer area at th e sa me tim e, but Burnsid e's ma ssive ai r over th e tabl e top ca rr ied him into th ird pl ace, a hea d of Clark. Burnside was really flying, but th ere wasn 't eno ugh laps left. At the flag it was Hilton , Syri ng, Burnside, Eaves, Dick. and Clark. In th e O pen B cl ass. onl y four rid ers showed for the sta rt . Taki ng th e Scra tch was Westl y H anson , followed by And rew Thompson, Mark Kristo ff a nd Pat J ordan , wh o sta rte d lat e and ended up IOO yards back . Thompso n m oved up n ext to H a nson; th ey rode th at way fro m th e tower to the top o f th e u p hill sectio n. wh ere Hanso n pulled a hea d by five feet. The two of them remained that clos e to the ch eckered flag. Behind the front-running duo were Kristoff , and Jordan. wh o had narrowed hi s defic it to 40 yards. In moto two, Jordan m ade up for lost tim e. grabbing th e lead over Thompson . Hanson a n d Kristoff. After one lap Jordan had 30 yards over Thompson, w ho had 15 yards on th e other two riders. On the third lap. H anson pulled up next to Thompson and th ey battled toothand-nail for a lap, before Hanson finall y took the advantage. Thompson stayed ultra -clos e. just waiting for a mistak e th at never appeared. Taking th e ch eckered flag in order was Jordan (P BI Sprockets), Hanson (T ea m ATAK). Thompson. a nd Kristoff (KRC Honda ). The overall ended
