East Coast Speedwaybanquet By Todd Kroh BINGHAMTON , NY, AP R. 9 Speedway riders from the eastern United States a ttended th e annual East Coast Speedway banquet on April 9, with this year's banquet being held at Morey's Restau rant in Bingham ton , New York. Awards were presented to the riders a nd staff of Action Park East Speedwa y in Greene New York and Grand Sport Speedwa y in Ow ego New York. T he even t traditionally is held not only to a wa rd last year's ou t.' standi ng performers, bu t a lso to usher in th e 1986 speed wa y seaso n wh ich begins in Ma y. After an o u tstanding dinner , promoter Jiri Nechleba o f G rand Sport Spe edwa y presen ted hi s sta ff with cert ifica tes o f a p preciation fo r the ir con tri bu tio ns durin g the 1985 season . Frank Wa tson o f Can ton , Pennsylvania , wh o took fourth a t the East Coast Ch ampionship , was the over all track points cha m p io n while Warren Diem of Kinzers, Pennsylva ni a , n um ber two in th e East Coast Ch a mpionship, took home th e Division One .plaque, Mike Buman of Bingham ton, turned th e oval the best of a n y Division two rider , winning th e po ints race and with it went th e Division Two awa rd . Wa tson was back in th e wi n ner's circle again as he was deemed th e most Improved Division One rider. New J ersey's Dal e Wakefield, who turned in a so lid year , was Division Two 's Most Imp roved R ider. G rand Sport's Rookie of th e Year aw ard went to 7-Up's Tom Burge o f J ohnson Ci ty, New York. J oe Morell o, Action Park East's promoter, was next a t the mi cro phone to present th eir awa rds. Certificates of appreciation a nd ja cket pa tch es were given .to the Actio n Park. East sta ff. The Fan of th e Year a ward went to J erry Christen son while Sp onsor o f th e Year was awarded to Tom a nd Sue Hunsinger as well as Bob Keech of Speedway Videos. The overa ll track points a wa rd went to th e man who dominated th e track durin g 1985, Warren Diem . T op 10 jackets were p resented to th e 10 highest point getters of th e year. JimNab inger , the co nverted fla t tracker from Wi ndsor, New Yor k, was Division One's Most Improved Rider while J ack Pi eper, th e im m i. gra nt from Co lorad o won the Mos t Improved Division Two crown. T he Kin g of th e Hi ll cha m pio nship , a season long set o f ma tch race event s, wa s won b y Bin gh amton 's Mark Edwards. Fourteen -yea r-ol d Damien Co rn well, wh o is bigg er a nd better than some 20-year -old rid ers, received the well deserved Rooki e o f the Year troph y. T he fina l a ward o f the evening was presen ted by J iri Nechleba to Bruce Nelson. Ku rt cruised to th e 250cc A win , wh il e brothers Aa ron an d J ames smoked to th e 250cc B mot ocross and 80cc hare scra m bles wi ns. In th e 250cc A HS class, Kurt jammed into th e lead righ t fro m th e sta rt, clos el y foll o wed by Aa ro n, both ridi ng 250cc Hondas. Can-Am rider Kell y Get zjumped to a poo r start bu t quickly worked into the si xth spot by th e first chec k. Getz co nti n ued to cli m b up through the pack until he reached the number th ree position. At th is po int, both Kurt and Aaron were wa y o u t in fro n t, ..15 seconds a head of Ge tz. But, Aaron eventua ll y dropped out o f th e race after losin g it in a deep mudhol e. ) Kurt went on to win th e race, follow ed by Ketz a nd first 200cc A rider Dan Fargen , riding a Kawasak i KDX. In th e motocross portion of the event, Aaron" ca ptured th e win in both motos for th e o vera ll. Bruce Norcutt (Honda) and Sco tt Biddle .(Ya ma ha ) fin ishe d second a nd third.
