Doug Chandler and hi s J erry Griffith-tun ed , Freddie Spencer/SuperTrapp Racing Honda led the fourth heat from sta rt to finish , in it ially followed by Pearson, Parker and Da y. Back in th e pits, Chandler pointed to the advantages of having a oneman team th is yea r, and said his bike was working well. Parker's mechanic, Bill Werner, was looking for a better combination, changing from the second-th irdfourth gear ing Parker ran in the heat to third-Iourth-fifth gearing. Werner also cu t th e rear tire on Parker's H arley-Davidson/Bell/SuperTrappsponsored Harley-Davidson 6OOR, and changed the ig nition black box , try ing to cure a misfire. The fir st semi ga ve Reid , Cornwell and Hoffman another sho t at making th e main , a nd it sta rte d o ut being a Reid/Hoffman battle. Hoffman mad e up serio us time and took th e lead in th e last turn , part of th e halfmile track, bu t Reid go t first place back in th e tigh ter section before th e jump . That didn 't last; Cornwell passed H offman and Reid; hi s su per, ior speed into, through and dri ve out of the fin al corner gave him fir st place in the IO-Ia p sem i, with a winning time of 7 minutes, 44.74I seconds. Reid was second . Pearson sho t out front in the second semi, ahead of of Harsh a a nd Sweet. Pearson favored his righ t foot , holdin g i t j us t off the ground, but really ran it in on th e left-h a nd ers, espe cially into the final infield corner exiting o nto the hal f-m ile portion of the tra ck. But with two laps to go Sweet passed Pea rson entering the last infield turn , a nd pu lled it o ut a bit. Pea rso n still made th e main; Sweet won th e semi at 7 minutes, 42.265 seconds. Fay pa ssed H offman on the eigh th of 10 laps in the Las t Ch an ce Q ual ifier and went on to win in 7 mi n utes, 45.569 seconds. " It 's a long race," sa id Carr before the start of the ma in. "Y ou ca n 't make an y predictions. I'm going to play it by ear. It 's not going to be a 25-lap sprint race. You can 't do it; thi s track is too long. The race will be about 18 minutes long.
