Burgess wins
Medford
Arenacross
By Clay Light
MEDFORD, OR, MAR. 14
The first night of a sensational
three-race weekend at Medford's
Jackson County Expo Park saw
Californian Lance Burgess
(Yam) nab a triple win during Friday
night's arenacross. Burgess took the
I25cc, 250cc and Open Pro main
events on his Yamaha 125 and logged
a second place finish in the Open A
final behind Medford's Mark Matthiesson (Hon). Ryan HuHman
(Yam/Kaw) came down from Roseburg to conquer the 60cc and 80cc A
mains, running away with both contests.
Burgess' first task came in the 125cc
A main, which was trimmed to eight
riders from the nearly 30 signed' up.
Burgess burst off the line at the snap
of the rubber band and rode like a
mad-man while the near-capacity
crowd ate it up. Fellow Californian
Brad Johnson (Kaw) jammed his way
into second, closely pursued by Honda
riders Troy Coburg and Todd Alter
and Kawasaki-mounted Tim Phillis,
who was one of four riders in attendance to contest four classes throughout the evening. Burgess destroyed
every berm in the process of taking
win numberoneon the Richard Miller/Buck Sport YZ while Johnson
was relegated to second over Alter.
Alaskan transplant Jeff MacDonald
(Yamaha of Roseburg/Yam) was LO be
Burgess' closest competition in a wild
250cc A main event, which was the
largest class of the evening with 30plus riders, running a series of A, B
and C mains. Only the fastest riders
would make the A main and once
again, Burgess proved to be unstoppable. MacDonald hounded 125mounted Burgess but was not able LO
put a move on Burgess for the lead,
eating Burgess' roost of fine southernOregon silt to the finish. For Burgess,
it was a jubilant win number two
while third went the way of AMA
Expert TT rider Jeff Harsha (Kaw) of
Phoenix ahead of Californian Kevin
Knox (Kaw) and Mike Hamilton
(Yam).
Burgess had his up-and-comings
in the Open A final, recording his
worst finish of the night with a
second in the race behind local Honda
I
CRSOO,mounted Mark Matthiessonof
Medford. Mauhiesson held off the
Yamaha speedster and became the
only big-bore rider to beat the Eureka
resident in the evening. Knox worked
his way into third late in the race,
where he would get a bird's-eye view
of the Matthiesson/Burgess finish at
the checkered flag in the 10 lap finale.
Roseburg Yamaha's Huffman was
also a big winner, taking the classes
that Burgess, Matthiesson and Old
Timer winner Jerry Johnson didn't,
which were the 60cc and 80cc A main
events. Huffman put on the show of
the evening in small-bore action,
clearing the jumps that several I25cc,
250cc and Open riders dared not to
attempt. Huffman easily demolished
the 60cc A main over central Oregon's
Chris Paterson (Kaw) and fellow KX
pilots Shawn Highland and Zach
Rund. Huffman repeated his marvelous fete irtthe 80cc A final, winning
the event he led from start to finish on
his Yamaha.
The evening's highlight came in
the form of the Open Pro main event,
featuring a $400 purse which lined
up two rows of riders in a six-four
staged start. Yamaha riders Hamilton
and Burgess banged bars off the start
and entered turn one in the one-two
spots ahead of big- bore rider Mauhiesson, Honda 250-mounted Mike Zillgill
and Knox, who was one of five 125cc
riders to make it LO the elite Pro finale.
Burgess took over from turn one and
wenton to loga rare triple win, which
was quite an accomplishment on a
125cc. Second in the race fell to
Hamilton over Matthiesson, MacDonald, who was making his debut at the
facilities, Zillgitt and Knox, who
rounded out the LOp six money spots.
