Double class winners galore at Talladega RR By Mike Church TALLADEGA, AL, MAR. 22-23 The first weekend of spring opened coolon Saturday morning but quickly warmed up on and off the track at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway as the track hosted a round of the WERA National Sprint Road Race Series. B Production Novice class action led off Sunday's finals on the new lA-mile course with Bill St. John grabbing the lead and then holding off challenges from David Dearing to take the win. Clubman enLrants combined with Vintage I comp~titors to provide a showcase for a ballle between Dan Horton and Steve Tully. Mike Reed put on a show of his own as he overtook the leaders only to over-cook the big bowl turn and run off the track. Reed re-entered the race to finish third overall behind winner Horton and runner-up Tully and to claim the Clubman Novice win. The combined B Superbike Novice and Expert class final saw 16 riders on the grid. The race developed into a lead swapping duel that saw Thomas Stevens take the checkers first, ahead of Chip Terrell and Mark Schledorn. Mark Oldham held off Dennis Martin and Pat Harris to snare top Novice honors. Paul Bray bested David Dearing and Bill St. John with a last lap, last turn pass to take the C Production Novice class win. Greg Tysor came back from a rough and tumble weekend at Roebling Road to top Bart Peterson and Ron Ewerth in a very close C Production Expert final. WinnerTysor, whojust added Dunlop to his list of sponsors which include Rocky Cycle/KalGard/Progressive Suspension/Kerker and Buzz's Psycles, said, "Bart (Peterson) balked in one corner and that's all I needed. I really enjoy racing against Barl and Ron (Ewerth)." A Superbike action saw Ft. Meyers Cycles/RSC/Vanson Leathers-sponsored Thomas Stevens win on his GSX Suzuki with Mark Schledorn and Bryan Schwing providing close company. Schledorn came back in Formula I to put his GSX Suzuki in the top finishing slot with young Roby Head and Schwing finishing second and third, respectively. Texan Mike Cook made his long journey to Alabama payoff as he won the D Production final, leaving Chuck Hunneycull and Buzz's Psycle-sponsored Jay Rathburn to finish behind in the Yamaha RZ350 dominated race. When the C Superbike Novice final lined up everyone expected and got a rematch of the earlier Production class race as St. John held off challe!1ges from Bray and Harris for the WIn. Tysor romped to another win in the combined CSuperbike/Vintage IV Greg Tysor (67), seen here dueling with David Huneycutt (42), won both the C Production and C Superbike Expert finals at Talladega. race with Rathburn taking second. Beno Rodi grabbed the Vintage win and his second trophy aboard his ageless 1967 Norton Arias 750. Rodi had taken a second in Vintage II, behind Kawasaki-mounted Charles Worrell, in Vintage II. Rodi rode a 1958 Norton Dominator 500 in that race. Walt Schaefer Cycle Supply/Somerset Co.!Action Yamaha-sponsored' Bart Peterson chalked up a win in the A Production class final to take a chunk of Yamaha contingency fund money home. In fact, Peterson earned $1100 in Yamabucks for his day'sriding. Thomas Stevens, still smarting from an injured wrist and elbow he suffered at Roebl ing Road, finished second with Chris Terrell third. The day's racing ended on a high note with the B Production final that provided what many thought was the best racing of the meet.
