Kaiser wins Mabton Dunes MX By The Squisher MABTON, WA, MAR. 2 Mabton Dunes greeted 140 riders to the opening day of motocross in Central Washington. Fog was covering the valley David Bailey (6) didn't have any troubles winning the 250cc class at the Carolina Springs MX Series. AliA Carolina Spring III Series: Round 1 Andrews, Bailey, Neeley storm MX series opener By Henry Muller CHARLOTTE, NC, MAR. 16 Mike Andrews, David Bailey and Robby Neeley bagged the Pro-Am classes in round one of the Ninth Annual Budweiser/AMA Carolina Spring Classic MX series at Metrolina Speedway. Promoters Toney and Venda Harrell welcomed 300 plus riders and a huge crowd to watch 'as Gerald Wood and Keith Watson 16 led the first 250cc Pro mota off the line. Team Honda's David Bailey was midpack but wasted no time moving ta second. Bailey hounded Wood and shot past as Ohio's John Shay filed through traffic to shadow Wood. Bailey cruised to the checkers with J .B.lSinisalo's Shay dropping Wood ta third. "By the time I got through the pack I knew Bailey was history," said runner-up Shay. . Bailey kept his jersey clean in mota two and wheelied away from the field as Robby Neeley and Wood argued over second. Mike Andrews eyed the battle from fourth but couldn't get a wheel past Wood. Bailey styled for the fans before taking the win with a half a lap cushion over Neeley, Wood and Andrews. Bailey grinned at the pay window and said, "This track pays better than mine does." A Suzuki freight train led the first 125cc Pro mota with rookie Expert Larry Andrews heading Mark Spriggle and brother Mike Andrews out of turn one. Mike Andrews wicked up his Fatback-tuned Barr's Competition Suzuki and surged into the lead with Gerald Wood charging to second. An· drews kept the lead while the pack shuffled with Jeff Bowling crossing the line for second over Robbie Taylor. The Andrew brothers showed the way in mota two with Mike taking the lead from Larry, while Mark Spriggle gave chase. Wood flew from sixth to second but Andrews was gone as Aaron Bollinger passed Larry Andrews for third. The top four remained the same as Spriggle finished fifth. Keith Watson and Scott McClain set a fast pace in the first Open Pro mota, while Ron Jones and Tim Terry diced for third. Team Green's Robby Neeley stalled in the first turn but was quickly up to fifth with Terry and Jones in his sights. The duel up front saw McClain losing a few seconds to Watson before closing in to take the lead. McClain oared to the win over Watson with Neeley's drive ending in third over Terry and Jones. Watson snagged the econd mota lead from Jones only to surrender from the pressure of eeley. Watson dropped out as S&S Sprockets/Gearsponsored Neeley locked up the win with Jones and Terry behind. Mc Clain's 1-4 finish landed second overall behind Neeley. Todd Adams and Eddie Almond fought (or the lead in the first 250.cc B moto until Jim Chester worked past and went unchallenged for the win. Georgia riders Jason Coleman and Almond followed Chester to the checkered flag with Tony Bullard fourth. B-C/Dal-Kawa Cycles/Maxima/ Scott-sponsored Chester took the holeshot in the econd mota and never looked back, while Bullard held off Craig Ellis for second. "I tried a third gear start and came off the line like a gi!nshot;" said Chester after an easy' wm. MX Fox-sponsored Damon Bradshaw dominated I25cc B class action with a I-I score over Kevin Walker's 2-3 finish. Greg Templeton led the second until Bradshaw arrived and held on to second for a 4-2 third over· all. Iron Horse/Coliseum Cycle's Dean Herrin won the first 250cc mota despite a crash with a nine second lead over James Hayes. "I stuck my wheels in two diHerent ruts and over the bars I went," said Herrin. Hayes took second ahead of Rick Rikard. Jonathon Trull coupled a fifth place. first moto finish with a win in the second race for third behind Herrin and Hayes. The top three positions were set as Trey Phillips broke away from tra[[jc {or fourth. Stevie Childress gave Bradshaw a run in mota two until Bradshaw made a clean pass stick. Early leader Stovall dropped back to 10th as Moree charged to third for second overall. Michael Fann led every lap of both Junior Mini class matos, while Carl Fogle traded positions with Ontario's Rob Bulyovsky for secQnd overall. Barr's Competition's Fann did double duty, taking the Pee- Wee class as well over a hard riding Joey Dillard with Bo San non third. Last year's Senior cia s champion Steve Lewis returned to the scene and committed another double mota win, while Georgia's David Heath edged Virginia's Bill Darling for second.• Results JR MINI: 1. The Open B class blasted into the first turn with Gary Larson (KTM) leading An Thompson (Han) and Bill Kai er (KTM). The race tightened up on the second lap as Ken Bailey (KTM) pa sed Thompson and the (irst three racers bunched together. Kaiser was really on the gas, as he looked for a place to pass Larson but ended up 20 feet back at the checkered flag. Bailey tired on the super rough sand track and fell back but held for a third·place finish. The second mota looked like a repeat of the first until Lar on and Kaiser collided. Larson went down, but Kaiser held on to go on to an easy win. Lar on cruised in for second with Bailey again third. Tom Killieman (Kaw) led Kevin Cornell (Yam) and Mike Hartman (Yam) in the first mota of the 125ccA class. Cornell wasted lillie time in taki ng over the lead, which he stretched to the wire. Hartman, who was riding two classes during the day, eventually passed Killleman also to take second. Cornell decided he didn't want to pass anyone in the econd moto, so he ju tied from start to finish. Behind him, Hartman was looking strong in second place until he crashed on the rough uphill. Before he could get going, Scon Hickson (Kaw) and Kinleman flew by. They stayed that way until the end with second overall going to Hickson with his 3-2 maLO finishes and third went to Hanman. The 125cc Pro class had Jamie - Munson (Hon/SimpsonITorco/HiFlite/EP/Oakley) leading the fir t maLO, followed cia ely by Steve Oster (Kaw), Call Steffy (Yam), Tom Daugherty (Suz) and John Sowards (Kaw). Oster took the lead on the first lap as the pack spread out. Oster appeared to have the race in control when a shock bolt broke, sending him to the ground and out of the race. Munson cruised to the lead with Steffy and award further back. Munson took the holeshot in the second maLO, as he and Oster pulled away from the others. Oster took advantage of Munson having ridden in two cia ses during the day to work past the tiring leader. John Sowards (Kaw) and Steffy also moved past Munson, as Sowards closed in on the new leader. A crash and subsequent hand injury ended Sowards'fine ride, giving second to Steffy, who finished behind Oster with Munson in tbird. The Iron Man Award had to go LO Munson for the day, a he rode 32 laps on one of the roughest tracks in the onhwe t, winning the 250cc Pro class in the process.
