Faria flies in Imperial By Scott Daloisio IMPERIAL, CA, MAR. 5 "Flyin' Mike" Faria, of Colton, California, powered his potent Jawa to a come-from-behind photo-finish victory over John Cook in . the Scratch main in the Fourth Annual Denny Pyeatt Memorial tonight. The race, which is held each year at the California Mid-Winter Fair, is run' in the memory of Pyeatt, who was killed while racing in England in the summer of 1982. The event is fast becoming one of the most prestigious in American speedway. This year's event also saw the first appearance of Alan "Crazy" Christian with the number one on his back that he earned in 1985. Unfortunately, Christian's first ride with his new number was in Handicap heat number four, and he ended up falling down. Christian did, however, come back later in the program to win his Scratch heat and semi. The preliminary heat races also saw a wild crash involving Second Div.ision rider Bryce Eikelberger. As Eikelberger exited turn four on the last lap of his heat, lie caught traction, wheelied almost halfway down the straight, then lost his machine, which began to tumble through the air directly at starter Dennis DeTemple. DeTemple, using good judgement, dove 10 feet onto an infield platform and was narrowly missed by the bike, which hit and knocked down the starting gate. Fortunately, Eikelberger escaped with only a good shaking and a broken zipper on his boot while DeTemple received a good rush of adrenal in. Second Division riders ran their main event first, and it was a Kevin Krugh (Ron W. Hauck Electric/ Heather Electric/Lisa/Mom and Dad Jawa) affair, as he led it from wire lO wire. He was challenged in the last bend by Mike "Pops" Dwyer, but Dwyer made contact with Krugh and fell before he could get by. That let Krugh cruise by the line for the win with Donnie Odom a distant second and Randy Skinner third. The Division One Handicap main matched three of southern GaJifornia's rising young talents against three veterans of speedway. Gary Hicks, Ronnie Correy and Mark Dwyer represented the new breed against seasoned British League performers Sam Ermolenko, "King Kelly" Moran and Brad Oxley. The win was scored by the new breed as Hicks (Scon Goggles/ Milne Brothers/Mom and Dad Weslake) led it all five laps over Correy. Hicks started the event from the 10 while Correy was off the 20. Correy was moved back after inflicting a o iii 9 ~ 6 u VI > '" o b J: a. Winner Mike Faria (9). Sam Ermolenko. John Cook and Alan' Christian await the start of the Scratch main at the Denny Pyeatt Memorial. raced three abreast down the back chute on lap two and he moved into second, but Faria came back by on the next lap. Faria was close to a halfstraightaway behind when Cook took the white flag, but he quickly closed the gap and rode outside Cook on the back chute. Cook won the battle to the next corner and seemingly had the race won, but Faria (Shoei/J/ Oilzall/Oakley/Hi-PoinliKal-Gard/ Tsubaki/George Wenn) wemlow as they came out of four. Whether Cook fell asleep or backed off thinking he had the race won is the question, but no matter the answer, the verdict was the same. Faria edged him to the line sending the near-sellout crowd inlO a frenzy at one of ,the wildest races they will ever see. rather easy win over the competition in his heat race. Correy closed on Hicks in the main, but could never mount a serious challenge and was lOO far behind lO take advantage when Hicks went wide on the final bend; third spot was taken by Moran. Ermolenko was the only rider to make both First Division mains and he was late arriving on the grid for the Scratch main. When informed that Ermolenko was changing a tire, Christian laughed and said, "Good for him, but I have been running the same edge all night." Christian's old edge and Ermolenko's new one didn't work when it came to winning the event. Christian broke from the pole and into the lead at the outset, but Cook and Faria caught him and they IT'S BACK! .. --....., ............
