Kawa saki rid er Zach Rund also went wild , winning th e 60cc a nd 80cc A main events, but hi s o n ly brass came in th e 60cc class a s his 80cc ride was merelv an exhibition. T h e rid~s pu t in by R un d showed the dimi nu tive speedster to be un stop pa ble. Ru nd manhandled the60cc class first on h is Kawasa ki, wi th a big win over Honda-mount ed J oe Don Ireland, wh o was to be R u nd 's closest co m p et itio n throughout th e da y. Kevin O 'Conner mad e things close in a battle for second, whi ch went th e way of Irela nd. In the 80cc A main , R un d sho t off th e lin e on h is KX60 a nd was never h ea ded. Irela nd was a lso 60cc mounted, aboa rd h is trusty H on d a , bu t co u ld n ' t fin d a way around h is pe sk y riva l a nd followed his main co m p etition across th e line. Good news came when it was rep ort ed that R u nd was contestin g in exhibitio n status, which gave Irela nd a jubilant win for first-place brass over Co nrad Schubkagel and Brit Salmon. T h ro ugho u t th e d a y, th e two wheelers pl ayed seco nd fid d le to th e three-wheelers, bu t o ne of the best ra ces of th e day ca me in the form o f th e 125 cc A main e ve n t. Word (S.O .I\1.A.!Hon) did a number on th e I25cc class to come away with th e top brass a fter defeating Will ie Beck and Tony Sprangel. Word th en came rig h t back to compete in th e day 's highlight, th e Open A mai n eve nt. Tt was a battle between three Class C pro fessio na ls when In gl e, Word a nd Junio r P ro Ro bbie Blagg (H on 500)jammed i nto turn o ne . Both Word a nd Blagg faced handicaps in the event. Blagg had done very little racing sin ce last summer's TT sea so n up north and rode o ff th e pa ce, and Wo rd was aboard h is X R200 , w h ich was well down on power com p ared 10 the 500s. In gle p ut hi s morocrosser in to the lead and held o n to the fin ish. wh ile Blagg took a seco n d on th e Specialty Cvcl es H onda.
