At the checkered it was Kend ig, Kirk, S trodley, Hi cks and Sch neider. Severa l new riders filled out the 125cc class, including Mi ni reg u lar R ick Smi th. riding his new 125 Honda. At the start of mota one it was Lance R udge (Kaw) getting th e holeshot over Dennis McConnell (Ka w), Chris Clark ( KT M), Ri ck Smith and Tim Wells. McConnell ran ultra close to Rudge but couldn 't get by. Smith looked good o n th e bigger bike as he pr essured Clark everywhere. but he was a lso unab le 10 pass. For two la ps th e pos iti ons stayed th e same. On lap three Smi th rode wid e in to the sweeper and halfwa y th rough h e sq uared it off a nd dove under Rudge flyin g p ast him over th e jump. Within a lap Rudge rep aid th e favor, but Smith co n tin ued to run r igh t o n hi s rear wh eel. In the east co rner, Smi th slid under R udge aga in , out the two got tan gl ed up and went down har d . Takingover the lead an d go ing o n to th e win was McCon nell , wh o was followed by Clark a nd Wel ls. R ud gegot up slowly and fin a lly crossed th e line in fourth . Smith , wh o was quite shaken took fifth. The third m ota was d ifficu lt 10 sta rt as most rid ers j umped th e lights. On th e restart McConnell a nd Well s jumped aga in sending th em 10 th e third row , which was a first th is sea- son. At th e stan it was R udge leading Smith, McCon ne ll . Clark and Wells . Wi thin a lap McCo n nell n ew u nder Sm it h a nd went gunning for R udge. Smit h tried McConnell on th e inside a nd rode side-by-side, even over th e jum p but McConnell continually shut th e door on th e new 125cc rider. At the nag it was R udge, McConnell, Smith. Clark a nd Well s. In mota one of th e 250cc class, everyo ne jumped th e line except one rider. At th e stan it wa s Dean Autrey (H a n) flying off th e back row 10 lead Kyle Hall (Ha n). In rnot o two Hall a nd Autrey got too anxiou s a nd went to th e back ro w. On th e restart Hall pulled a fan ta st ic holesh ot 10 lead Mill'S, Zell er, Au trey an d O 'Niel. Mil es ran around Hall on th e sweepe r tim e aft er time and th ey rode side-by-side o ver th e j u mp lap aft er lap , but Hall sh u t th e door every tim e wh ere it co u n ted most. Au trey moved up to third and wa s reall y stylin g over th e jump bu t he co u ld n' t ca tch the duo up front. At th e fin ish it was Hal l. Miles, Autrev, Zell er a nd O 'Nil'! . Quarte rley a lmost d id n ' t race, ha ving crashe d in p rac tice injuring h is hand a n d da maging h is Fl, but was a ble to beg a p a ir of handl ebars and ta pe up h is ha nd in time to go head-to-head wi th Nitta. Quarterley dropped the la p record 10 I:I0.2, beating the quick time .set by Nitta during Saturday's endurance race. Nitta grabbed the holeshot but lit his tire up in th e back field, a llowing Q ua rterlev .to take over first. Nitta shadowed Quartertley th e entire 15 laps, never more than three seconds behind. Quarterley's excellen t drives of hum 12 negated Nitta's slight topspeed adva n tage down th e straightaw a y. Sparks flew ea rly in the day as Vintage riders John Scott on his 750 Triumph and C raig Skinner on his Trident battled for 10 laps, but Scott sq ueezed past Skin ner to take first p lace. Gl en Smith smoked the field on his 600 Ninja in th e Novi ce race , which was run con currently wit h the Vintage class. The Stock B ra ce wa s a dogfight between Chuck Lee, Kell y Byrd and Da n Elder. Lee's Suzu ki GSX R led lap o ne, but Byrd ma neuvered his Fl past Elder a nd Le e o n lap four. Byrd p u lled out a sligh t lead . but Lee outbraked Byrd o n lap six to ta ke first place aw ay. Elder got serious on lap eigh t, taking second from Byrd and moving in behind Lee . Le e held orr Eld er to tak e th e win. The Stock C a nd D race saw Mik e Williams ' Ninja holeshot th e firs t turn ahead of Jegg Hoeppner and G lenn Smith. Williams started to pull out a sliglu lead but went down in turn 12, g iving first to Hoeppner. 1 iuo (Yam ) ran aw ay in Superstree t A a nd B, while Nigel G al e (Ya m) left th e field in Supe rstree t C. T im Bergstrom led th e early la p of the S u pcrstree t D race, bu t a deterrui ned Greg Smi th got by Berg strom o n lap five. R ick Willi ams (Yam) a nd J erf Franks (Ya m) debat ed third place d u ring th e entire race. but a t th e checkered n ag , Fra n ks had th e adv antage. Sm ith went o n to tak e first in Fo rm u la T hree after a nothe r batt le with Bergst rom . Formula Two anion saw Bob Sm ith (Ya m) o u tr ide Wayne Man ell a 10 tak e first , whil e Quarter lev scored in Fo rm u la One. Nin o led la p o ne of the F-I race , but Byrd pu t h is stock FZ in front OlJ lap two . Nino ca me back o n lap three wh ile Deit er Lane mov ed a round Byrd to tak e over second.
