Nobody even ca me close a fter th e first loop , as Walker contin ued to stretch his lead to over four minu tes a t th e finish. Marking, running a n Open bike for th e fir st time in a year a fter bein g th e third-ranked 250cc rider in 1985, na il ed down second overall. Though the race for first a nd second seemed settled immediately, third was not decided until th e last lap. Mark McP erry (Yam) had been runn ing third Open for th e last two laps, bu t with onl y 50 yards to th e finish, Parker Motor Honda, Answer Products a nd Means Machine Ra cing's P hil Means swept past to claim third. " I looked back and could see Phil's dust and rode crazy to stay ahead, bu t he had a better line just before the finish and passed me," stated McPerry. Alan Ba rker rounded out the top five on his 500cc Husky. R ich O 'Brien (Han ) to o k top honors in the 250cc class after chasing IVCC's Todd Kennedy (Yam ) all day. At th e start, Kennedy hit Check One side-by-side with Walker. By th e halfway point of the first loop , Marking was past and Kennedy settled into a comfortable third overall, first 25Occ. He rem ained here until just under a lap to go when di saster struck. The l25cc cla ss was won by a newco rner to th e di strict, Bru ce Taylor (Ka w). Taylor took com ma nd early as he led th e first lap, followed closely by Tim Funk (KTM). Lap two found Funk taking the lead as Taylor pitted. Funk then led until lap three, when his spark plug wire came loose. By th e time he had figured out wh at happened, Taylor was by for the lea d. Kearny Mesa Yamaha's Bo b Bell a lso got by Funk and in to-seco nd. O nce Funk fina lly did get going, he co ll ided with a three-wheeler and lost hi s rear brak e. T aylor cru ised in with th e l25 ccw in , with Bell fo llo wing in second a nd Dan DesRosi ers (KT M) slipping past Fund o n th e last lap for third. Th e Vet class was won by a hardcharg ing Dennis Stevens (Suz), wh o took th e lead o n th e seco nd loop a nd was never cha lle nged to th e finish a t 13th o vera ll.
