Browning a lso took home the fir st Iron Man trop hy o f 1986. While Matthews was credi ted with leading every la p of th e race, hi s seco nd-mala win didn 't co me easy. Suzuki rider Tim McCaffrey hounded Matthews for three laps and pulled even with him down severa l ro ug h stra ig h ts. McCaffrey ra n into problems on th e la st lap and dropped to a n event ua l fourth . Yamaha of Troy's Chuck Carlisle ca pped o ff a charge through th e pack with second place and seco nd o vera ll. T im Randich led th e fir st 250cc/ Open Am at eur m ota, with Robert Russell second. After moving up a nd shado win g Randich for three laps, Bea sley Honda o f Ozark 's J eff Brown powered by past th e lead er o ver th e big scoring tow er , o n ly to m istake th e wh i te flag for th e checkered and pull o ff. Randich went on to win while Brown reentered the tra ck a nd was able to salvage a seco nd pl ace. Brown wa s a lso pl agu ed wi th trouble in th e seco nd heat. After nail ing down th e holeshot, he slo wed o n th e front straightaway and wa s pa ssed by severa l riders. Brown quickl y realized h e had left his gas off and set OUI a lte r the pack. Ra nd ich wa s o u t front en jo ying a co m fo rt able lead with Yamaha vet era n Otis Chapman running seco nd . Brown sliced th rough th e pack with ease. but hi s pro gress ca me to a halt whe n h e pulled in behind Chapman . Com ing o u t of a fast turn, Bro wn clipped Chap man 's back tire a nd wen t spraw li ng to thet urf, Rand ich a n d Cha p man fi nished 1-2 while Bro wn dec ided to retire from th e race rath er th an p lay ca tch up a seco nd time. Aided by an o vera bu nda nce o f dust, Wasden was p us hed to th e fin ish by PEP racer Kurt Sofka on hi s O pen Yamaha ent ry a nd ARA number o ne pl at e Bri an H arris o n th e Malco lm Smith H onda. Wasden a nd Sofka ran 1-2 for th e full 66 mil es. At th e fir st chec k, Husky-m ounted Er ic J en sen was holdin g third. Harris, wh o had a I O-ki ck start, was up to fourth, followed by H onda-m ounted J eff Bukami er a nd Novice Yamaha 250 racer Ca rey Downs. By the 15mile point, Downs m oved Bukami er back to six th , an d a t 30 mil es. H arris took third away from J en sen.
