T h e fa ns were provided with excellent raci ng action as Michi ga n's top rnorocrossers went a t it with so me of the best Pro-Am and Am a teur ride rs in th e Eastern U.S. a nd Canada. Illinoi s' Breck Powers a nd Michigan's T odd DeH oo p were a lso big money winners as eac h took turn s in the P ro class winner's circle. Jon es , J ohn Grewe a n d Fra n k Lamp eac h took their Kawa sa kis to wins in the l25cc P ro q uali fiers Sa turday, J ones again moved out front on the first lap of the fina l, with G rewe and Andy Michner dici ng for seco nd . G rewe came ou t ahead at th e chec kered , with Sa n ford Bu ch alter a nd Davey Coombs ro u nd ing out th e to p five. J on es was also a q ua lifier wi n ner in th e 250cc Pro class along with Powers a nd defending AMA Pro-Am cha m p Tim Coombs. Powers took adva ntage o f poor sta rts in th e final by Coom bs a nd J o nes an d ran a wa y from the p ack ea rly for a convincing win . Coombs became entangled with Canadian Pat Bastedo as he made a mo ve for seco nd. -DeHoop passed both for the runner-up spot as Coombs m oved ba ck into th ird with Sa n ford Buch a lter in fourth an d Ba stedo fift h. T he Ca nadian cont ingent fared we ll in the Ama teur ran ks as fellow countr yme n Bill H a m ilt o n a n d T erry Baker eac h took a fir st-p lace trophy home. Hamilton bested Ohio's Ed Snyder a nd Mi chigan's Eri c Klem en t in 125cc . C action on h is Ho nda. Bak er was a sta rt -to-fin ish winner in . the Open 250/Open i B .c1ass on h is Ka wasaki. He was followed by KT Mmou nted Kevin Gi bbs a n d Ya ma hamounted George Mekji an . Ca nadian Chris Le m mon led early before crashing h is wa y back to seventh. Steve Croew blew h is cha nce for th e win wh en he ran over th e a lready-do wn ed Lemmon, then tangled with a haybale over the finishline jum p. DeH oop brought Mi ch igan its first Pro victory of th e ser ies with a wire-to-wire win in the l25cc class. He was cha lle nged ea rly by another Mi chiganer. Bu ch a lt er. Th e tw o touched together several times before DeHoop wheeled away. J o nes, Greg Bow en and Grewe rounded out th e . top five. Stev e C h ildress needed a last-lap pass to grab h is second 85cc wi n of th e weekend. Childress fought for nine laps to get around up -an d-co mer Br ia n Swi nk , fi na lly getting by through the whoops o n th e whi te flag lap. The 250cc Pro finals provided Mike J ones a nd T im Coombs a chance to fin ally go at it against each other. T he two had brought their ro ugha nd- tumble passing tac tics acqu ired o n th e National circu it to Sagin aw , eac h bu sting th rough the pack with do-or-die passing. In th is race, the two ga ted well with Coombs out fro nt a n d J ones in th ird beh ind DeH oo p . J ones soon m o ved into seco nd an d took up the ch ase, an d o n the 12th lap h e banzaied by through the whoops a n d n ea rl y slammed Coombs th ro ugh th e ba nner s.
