Beca use o f th e 00 tem pe rature and six inc hes o f snow , man y r ide rs had tro u ble with th eir carbs icing up, not to mention a lack o f trac tio n . In search of th e winning ed ge, many rid ers modi fied their tir es for better tra ct ion on th e expected ice. Hi-Point-sponsored Dan Le es (Emmett Cycl e Sal vage) tried us in g a bare rim during pr acti ce o n h is KX500, but resigned to usin g a normal knobby wh en he found it didn't work as well as planned. ISDE medalist an d last year 's o verall winner , Jeff Miller (Coors Extra G old, O 'N eal USA) used sn o wmobi le clea ts in order to make h is Mike And erson-tuned KX250 ge t so me extra tractio n. Rep resenta tive of man y riders, KDX200-m ounted T a ylor O gd en (JATO Shop/Carl 's Cycles) used large screws on hi s tires. T he low -altitude wh ite clouds a nd wh it e lan dscape ca used vision p roblems as depth perception bl u rr ed a nd goggl es iced up in th e co ld wea ther , wh ich h ad warmed u p o n ly a few degr ees by the ti me th e bikes were to start ra cin g a t 12:30. T he bikes were lin ed up a t th e start with th eir riders sitting backwards o n them for a dead -en gine start. T he sig na l to ra ce wa s given . Amid the laughter a nd cheers of th e specta tors, th e rid ers sta rted th eir bikes and roost ed o ff across th e snow. Mill er pulled th e h olesh ot o n Ja ckson as th e rest o f th e pack fo llow ed. Several bikes fell down a t th e bottom of th e first little hill a nd a few ot hers cras hed into them , while th e lead ers cha rged ahead o u t of co ntrol over th e wh oops. Nea r th e en d of the severa l-m ilelong loop wa s a fla t a rea which co u ld be seen by th e specta tors. Mill er was th e first to ap pea r, jus t over a min ut e a head of J ackson (Ka w). A few m inu tes beh ind th em , Ogden was trying to wring more power ou t of hi s KDX to ca tch th em . Lees was next . At th e pits, a ch eckpoin t was bei ng set up. Mi ller blasted aroun d th e corn er of the sandwash, past the pi ts, a nd th rough the sti ll -being-prepped check before a n yone co u ld stop hi m . A very voca l group of people suggested th at h e be h eld for a wh ile when h e came a ro u nd agai n. So it was decid ed to ho ld him a t the ch eck for a few seconds the next tim e he came th rough . Jackson ca me through next , a little over a min ut e behind Mill er; O gden followed . Lees p u lle d into th e p its a nd ca lled it a day wi th mech an ical p roblem s. Ray Dal ey looked prett y smoo th as h e ca me in o n his n ew YZ490. J im Smith (H us) , T om H arri s (Hon) , Bob Bosserman (H us), a nd Joe Wood (Yam) slid through a nd resumed slid ing a bo u t o n th e slick course. Next a p pea red a beleaguered Ri ck Meredith (L&M Sales & Service), apparently wo rn o ut by the pr evious n ight's festiv ities. On th e seco n d lap, Jackson man aged to ge t ahead of Miller.in a was h, but th en -cra sh ed Into a sagebrus h wh ich, h e sa id, was twi ce th e size o f ' his bi ke. At th e end , th ou gh , J ackso n' was a full m inute a nd a half a head o f Miller. As Miller jetted throu gh th e was h and carne into view o f th e pit che ck aga in, th e chec k's me m bers wave d for h im to stop. Although Mill er put o n th e skids well a hea d o f tim e, h e slid thro ugh th e ch eck as th e checkers ran o u t o f th e way an d fina lly sto p ped h im a bo ut 15 yar ds past. As J eff questi ona bl y looked back, a n exaspera ted Ch u ck Wr igh t j us t yelled for h im to keep go ing w hich he hurriedly did. Dal ey go t past Ogden , wh ile Ha rris and Wood di ced back an d fort h behind th em . When Jackson came around again , Mill er was n owhere behind. During his thi rd la p , wh ile pursui ng J ackso n, Miller 's throttle stuc k. As he go t th at fix ed a n d h opped ba ck o n hi s bik e to begin pursuing Jackson again, th e su n ca me o u t for th e fir st time in wee ks . U n fo rtu na tely , Miller h ad chosen yellow lenses in orde r to get more definition; now that th e sun had co me ou t and brighten ed thi n gs up, h e got sno wblind a n d co u ld n ' t see, thus endin g h is race . J ackson fini she d hi s fourth la p , whi le th e o the rs were fin ishing th eir th ir d. Dal ey came in for seco nd overa ll.
