Tragedy struck the Paris-Dakar Rally on January 15 when event organizer Th ierry Sabine and four other people were killed in a helicopter crash in the West African country of Mali. The 22-day race was scheduled to enter it s longest stage, a 684-mile section from Gourma-Rahous to Bamaka, the day Sabine and the others were killed.
