Water in so me sec tio ns added a new dimension a nd cha lle nge to riders u sed to typ ical desert trails. Section o ne was the scen e of man y fives. Riders were required to c1im b a goodsized slick boulder aft er wallowing through a slim y strea m bed . Not many had th e right co m bina tio n of balance and traction. Following R o per wa s Bob Pen nington at 75 marks , whi le th e series leader prior to the Go lder Dam event, Greg Jones (Ya m), finished third with 79 marks. Keith Roper, Todd 's brother, came down from Oregon to ride, but finished after the time lim it witb an 81. In th e Advanced -class, Stev e Dick son (Yam) took the top spot with a 40 and bumped himself to th e Expert ranks. J eff Meade was a respectable seco nd while riding with an arm in a ca st . Bob Till, on another Yamaha , fin ished third. The Senior Ad vanced battle went to th e last sectio n with Joe Ige beating Steve Bigl er, 76-78. Interm edia te, Novice a nd Begin ner trialers rode over slightly ea sier sections in the morning and James Hunter was th e In term edia te winner with a 29.
