When the banner drop pe d, groans were heard from fa ns o n both sides of the fence. Purvin es had trouble getting h is new bike to fire o ff a nd started we ll back in th e pack. whi le Welch got a good start but then was a lmost separa ted fro m hi s bike whe n a nother rider slammed into hi m . Due 10 th e fig u re-e igh t co n fig ura tion o f th e 33-m ile- lo ng co urse. th e riders were visi ble aga in at th e halfwa y poi n t th rough th e fir st lap. At th at tim e. both riders had wo rk ed th ei r wa y th rough the slo wer traffic a n d were running 1-2 with Welch leading. At th e en d of th e firs t lap , Welch ca me in fir st but with a flat rear tire. Purvines ca me in a bo u t 20 seco nds behind him a nd, a fte r a fa st gas sto p, to ok o ver th e lead o n th e second lap. A minute an d 20 seco nds lat er , Welch lit o ut in hot pursuit. Midway thro ugh th e seco nd lap, th ey pa ssed th e pits aga in and Welch had closed th e ga p 10 15 seconds. At th e end o f lap two , Purvines still led an d ca me into th e p its with hi s usual wh oo ping an d hollerin g . just enjoyi ng th e hell o u t o f the ride, bu t it was back 10 bu siness as Welch pulled in behind h im. G oi n g o u t o n th e third a nd fin al lap. P urvines led Welch by the slim m est o f m argins - o n ly 10 seconds separated th e two riders. At th e h alfway point o f th e last lap, th e margin remai ne d th e same, with Purvines sti ll leading . Specta tors sta rted lin ing up a t th e checkered flag to witness th e finish. a nd specu lation was rampa n t as 10 who wou ld be the victo r in th is h ead-to-h ead duel. Chris Poc in o smoked th e 125cc Novice class wi th a pa ir o f perfect rn otos to build a seem ingly insurmoun table lead in th e most-contested divison in this ser ies. J a son Partridge fini sh ed th e da y with th e sa me kind of strang lehold in th e Jun ior Cycle No vice Division. and 350cc No vice Gary Deav er posted an easv w in th at m ad e h im look almost 'u n'bea ta ble in h is class. Other racers wh o fin ished Round2 wi th perf ect scores are Shane J ohnso n . wh o is two -for-two amo ng 250cc Int ermed iates, 250cc P ro Scott U nderwood, 500cc Pro Anthony Pasqualotto; 80cc Novi ce (9-11)Mik e Michels; .80cc Nov ice (12- 16) J eff Hodge; 80cc Intermedi at e David Griego. and 500cc Novi ce L yle Bingham . Bingham just managed to sne ak by for the o vera ll win in hi s class, but n ot with out a stiff cha lle nge from Greg Primm , who was ridi ng the Las Vegas Mo tocross Park tra ck for th e first time. Primm took th e holeshot in the fir st m oto, cla im in g th e lead just ahead of Desert H onda 's L arry Tashiro . Bing ham . Chris Slaughter and Bruce Cl ark. Primm set a blistering p ace until h e sta lle d hi s engine at the " do uble triples," a llo win g Bin gham to m ot or by a nd win th e first heat. Slaughter ca me in seco nd. P rimm jammed 10 th e lead in the second rnoto , just ahead of T ashiro. The Desert H onda rider en doed hard wh ile trying to pass Primm for the lead, leaving Tony Reichart a nd Bill Montgomer y to fight o ver second place. Bingham . who is spo n sored by T ommy Bs Ca sino . had ga ted poorl y a n d was well back in th e p ack. He mounted a mot e -long cha rge, effi cien tly picking o ff o ne rider after a nother, until h e had cl osed on leader Primm. By th e last lap Bingham was pushing Primm hard, but Primm held off th e challe n ge to tak e the checkers in fir st place. Bingham's better co m bined fini sh es netted him first pl ace overa ll.
