For the second straight year, the trial's namesake did not compete. It was Bernie Schreiber's 1979 World Championship that inspired his dub, the Valley Observed Trials Enthusiasts, to create a difficult national-to-world-Ievel trial in his honor. America's first off-road world champion was scheduled to fly . in from France four days after the event, accompanied by his wife, Yannick, the sister of former French and world champion Gilles Burgat. The Schreibers were married this past July in Albertville, France. In a trans-Atlantic call earlier in the week, Schreiber confirmed that he had finalized a contract to end his one-year retirement in world competition. He'll be riding a Yamaha for the European distributor and Sonauto, the French Yamaha (and auto) importer. The contract teams him with his brother-in-law. The duo will also do a series of week-long schools next summer during a break in the world schedule. Schreiber mentioned that he had hoped (,- -,' . to also ride the American series in 1986, but could not arrange support with Yamaha here. Head topped runner-up Kip Webb (Beta) by 10 points as he tabbed a 41 dropping an average of 1.7 points per section. (Entrants rode two laps of a 12-sectioR loop.) Both FIM and AMAI NATC regulations suggest a onepoint loss per section by an event's winner. Scott cleaned nine of his 24 rides. John Robertson (Yam) dropped 61 to take third.
