Clearance is tight. but jetting changes are easy. UN Attack Ninja (Continued from page 37) about $25 - double lhal figure if you wanl lO order new pans. To fil lhe lhrollie assembly lO the Ninja, install lhe lhrollieand roule Lhecables lO lhe carbureLors. You'll probably have lO shonen the lhrollie cables lO suil Lhe Ninja; installlhe lwisl grip, roule lhe' cables Lhe way Lhey'lI finally be installed, andcullhecable/cable-shealh as required. New cable ends are available al chopper/cuslOm-bike shops (check Harley-Davidson dealers), and pm simply be soldered onto the end of !he cable. CUl Lhe Ninja's wiring harness from the slOck swilch c1usler, and wire il lO suil the new swilch housing. Since the new push-pull lhrollie will posi lively pulllhe lhrollie closed, a lighler relurn spring can be used wilh Lhe CRs. Don'l be lempled lO strelCh the slock spring; lhal only makes il weak for pulling the lhrollie Lhe lasl bil of the way closed. Wilh a push-pulllhrolt.le and a sofler spring, lhe feel allhe lwisl-grip rivals lhal of lhe slock selup. . The exhaust system For any bike, improving the brealhing abilily of the inlake tracl is besl apprecialed when the exhausl syslem has been similarly modified. However, the skin-t.ighl bodywork of lhe Ninja means afLermarkel manufaclurers are limited in crealing complele header-and-muffler exhausl syslems. Since relaining the centerstand, and having free access lO lhe oil filler were priori lies for Lhe Altack Ninja, changes LO the exhausl syslem were limit.ed LO a slip-on muffler syslem. The SuperTrdpp slip-on mufflers for the 900 Ninja improve exhausl flow, as well as offering a five-pound weiRhl savings over Lhe stock mufflers. While a numberof afLennarkel manufaclurers now oUer slip-on mufflers, lhe SuperTrapp mufflers are unique: bolh exhausl flow and sound level can be adj uSled by a llerin~ Lhe number of diffuser discs al the end of lhe mu£f1er. The body of the mu£f1ers is construCled of a 3.5-in. drawn-aluminum LUbe. which is flared lO a 4.0-in. bell al the OUlpUl end, A sleel adapler clamps onto the slock headerpipes, and terminales wilh an internal sleel reverse-megaphone. The internal megaphone exits into a 2.0-in. perforated steel core, which is surrounded by fiberglass lO silence the exhausl pulses - all slandard design for aflermarkel mu[flers. Unique lO the SuperTrapps is lhe Slack of diffuser disc's boILed to the end of the mu£f1t·... TheS(' discs prevent lheexhausl from t'xitinli: straighl out Lhe end of the pipe: instead, the exhaust is forced through Lhe stack of discs. The discs serve lhree purposes: Lhey provide a final baffling LO lhe exhaust noise, allow a degree of tuning to match the flow requirements of the particular syslem, and direct the exhausl noise in a 360° circle. Since the exhaust gases flow through . the stack of discs, adding discs will increase exhaust flow (and noise). For street use, the omnidirectional exhaust flow is probably the mOSl important fealure: since the sound is seqt in all directions (to both sides of the bike), t.heapparent sound level of the bike is much lower. The diffuser discs enable Lhese mu£f1ers lO flow as much air as competing systems, while althe same time being much less irritating lO the non-molorcycling world. Their lunability also means lhe SuperTrapps aren'l any louder than they have to be. For the stock Ninja, SuperTrapp recommends a stack of eight discs per muffler. Experimentation with the Altack Ninja showed lhatll discs were aboul right for Keihin CR Special carbs filled wilh air £i)ters; 13 discs allow addilional flow when t.hosecarbsare filled with velocily stacks. For trolli ng around lown, lhe Attack Ninja wears air filters and runs II discs. Since the SuperTrapp mu£f1ers are delivered with a brushed-aluminum finish, corrosion and maintaining Lheir finish is a problem. An easy way lO shine Lhe mufflers is wiLh a green Scotch-Brite pad sprayed wilh WD40; gentle scrubbing wiLh Lhe pad reslored the brand-new appearance to lhe mufflers and their end caps and gave Lhem an altractive sheen. The SuperTrapp 900 Ninja mufflers retail for $219.95; extra diffuser discs are available in a package of six for $9.95. As the mufflers age, lheir fiberglass packing will eventually blow OUl; kils are available lO re-pack lhe mufflers for $5.95 (per muffler). Exhaust gasses will quickly soil lhe aluminum end-cap used lO retain t.he diffuser discs; SuperTrapp oUers polished slainless-sleel caps lhal are much easier lO care for al $9.95 each. The SuperTrapp mu[flers are avail- . a ble for a variety of mOlorcycles from your locdl dealer. Other stuff Wht'll owners of GPz900R Ninjas began complaining lhal Lheir engines were running too hOl, Kawasaki's solulion was LO fil a resisLOr in Lhe lemperalure g-duge's electrical circuit. The resislOr has a ceramic body, wilh solid wires protruding from each end. Over t.ime, lhese solid wires will vibrale, fatigue, and break. When the lemperature gauge on a Ninja SLOpS working (and il will), t.his resisLOr is lhe first lhing LO check. It's undernealh the godS tank, plugged into lhe wiring above the lhermoslat. Also in Lhe wiring depanment, lhe wire lo the oil pressure sensor is posilioned perilously close lo the exhausl header (left side of engine). On OCCdsion. lhis wire Cdn fall ag-dinst Lhe header, mell, and shon-oul ag-dinsl lhe header - which turns on the oil warning-light. If the oil warninglighl comes on for no good reason, check thal win'; ii's probably melled against the Iwaul'!'. For better appearance, the stock windshield was replaced wilh a dark liDled shield (a Lockhan Smoke Screen; $44.95). The screws lhal relain the windshield fil illlo plaslic nUlS lhal are a press-fil into the inside of lhe fairing. Those nUls walll lO CalI OUl of the inside of the fairing when lhe windshield is re-inslallt-d; a lendency lhal's easily solved by dabbing lhem wilh hOl glue or five-minule epoxy. •
