He is currently employed by Kawasaki. Pyle, ranked 12th nationally, edged Dave Webster by one point. Webster was in second, five points off Head's pace after the first loop, but his score ballooned on the final lap. Andy Saum, National number I I, took sixth with a 70. Behind him were two more Arizona riders, Bob Pennington, on the new Honda RTL250 single-shock, and Todd Roper. Roper, a wrestler at Arizona State, topped the Suppon class in 1984 to win the Grencius Cup. VOTE initiated the Support award in memory of the late Joe Grencius, a clubmate who won Suppon in 1982. Bruce Davis won the 1985 Support award with a 60, edging Howard Galbreath (PITS) by two points. Davis, a former ATA Expert, recently returned to the section wars at the Amateur level after a layoff. Davis registered seven of the 30 Support cleans. Both runner-up Galbreath and fifth-place finisher Rick Spruell managed five cleans. Ted Gansberger (PITS) took third with a 71. Another PITS rider, Jody Richison, finished fourth with a 75. A in the past, VOTE used the Litt.lerock Dam area in the Mojave Desert. Rocks, sand and water presented the major terrain challenges. The event has proved popular with spectators because of the section severity as well as the adjacency of sections to paved and din roads. Howard Phelps and Mike Bernbaum helped with the last-minute redesigning. Yokohama Tires sponsored the weekend doubleheader at Littlerock. Each starter received an inner tube from Yokohama. Pennzoil provided official entry stickers. Classy finisher pins were distributed both days. Head's 41 matched the winning score of the previous year turned in by Micheal Lauxen. In earlier years, aiming at national to world level sections difficulty, the organizers would "nick" Schreiber for close to 100 points. The difficulty has been tamed in recent years, but the event still remains the most demanding of the year. That's one reason it's partoIthe California State Championship Ser· _ ies. As the weekend began, threeriders - Head, Webb, and Pritchard - had a win apiece in the series. Compared to 1984, entries dropped by one, from 28 to 27. Out-of-area participatiop, however, increased from 12 to 16. Only II of the 27 starters - 14 Expens and 13 Supportwere from southern ·California. The Schreiber Cup drew seven riders from northern California (PITS), seven from Arizona (Andy and Ron Saum, Todd Roper, Bob Pennington, Greg Jones, Dave Montgomery and Eric Scheru) and one apiece from Utah (number one Jeff Kingsford) and Nevada (Mark Hitechew). • Results EX: 1. CA 91343 Valley Observed Trials Enthusiasts' (VOTE) first Dam Trial brought the area's rockhounds back to Li ttlerock to conclude a w:eekend of boulder-bashing, with Scott Head (Beta) matching his previous day's total of 41 to top the Experts by 29 points. The YeaI'S final American Trials Association (ATA) points event, for all classes, auracted 72 starte.rs, including 14 Experts and 16 Seniors. Beginners rode three nine-section loops. All others tackled 10 sections fOUI times. Head scored 24 of his class' 76 cleans. Runner-up Andy Saum (Yam) . made it interesting early, trailing by just two points after the first loop. At the midpoint he was 10 back, 19to 29. Scott finished with loop scores of 16 and 6 to pull away. Saum, National number II, registered 14 cleans, two more than third-place finisher Kip Webb (Na(ionaJ number eight) who scored a 72. Webb's third aJIowed him to repeat as California State Champion. Head, who won all three of the events he started, finished second in the fiveround series. Clive Belvoir (PITS) ranked third; Matt Pritchard, fourth. Ken Dodge ranked number one Amateur in the series. Dave Webster's 85 at Littlerock placed him 13 behind Webb in fourth. David Pyle finished 26 points behind Webster to take fifth. SeveraJ riders bunched from sixth down, led by Howard Galbreath (I 22), Todd Roper (127), Jeff Kingsford (128), Clive Bel· voir (129), Kevin Norton (132), and Bob Pennington (133). Norton's lOth was nine places lower than he finished the year in bicycle trials competition. Norton's National Of( Road Bicycle Association trials championship earned him a trip to Europe from his sponsor, Kuwahara. According to Norton, the motorless version of the spon is taking off overseas. Brad Davis notched his second win of the weekend as his 82 topped Greg Betante by 12 in Amateur competition. Rick Spruell finished two markers behind Betante. Tim Walker, carrying the ATA Amateur Number One plate from 1984, settJed for fourth.
