Kadlec steals TurkeyRace By Roger Dowden LARAMIE, WY, NOV 24 The Laramie Dirt Riders have a reputation of putting 011 one_ of the toughest cross country races in the Rocky Mountain area and this year they did it again. When the event was over, it was Fritz Kadlecedging Mark Hines at the finish line by a few feet. The course consisted of sagebrush plains, rocky canyon trails and incredibly long and steep uphill and downhill trails that resembled bobsled runs. The entire course was covered with anywhere from three to 30 inches of crusty drifted snow. On race day, another two inches of wet, slick snow was deposited. Recent returnees from the ISDE in Spain, Kadlec and Hines, were in attendance along with the 1985 Rocky Mountain Enduro Champion John Bruckbauer. The Le Mans style start found Wyoming's Rick Milonas (KTM) in the lead. Not intimidated by the luminaries in attendance, Milonas led the first three miles of the first lap until he imbedded himself in a snowdrift. Hines, who was in hot pursuit, fell on top of Milonas and then Skeeter Jacobson (Kaw) fell on both of them. Hines was able In extract himse1£ and continue. He had the lead until he hit another driftand was passed by Jamie Burgess on yet another KTM. Burgess succumbed to a flat tire shortly after Iht· firstcheckand Hines was alone in the lead. Kadlec, however, caught Hines while he was pushing through a drift into the second check. Hines was able to keep the lead and stretched it to six minutes over Kadlec by the stan-finish checkpoint. The first nine-mile loop had taken the leaders about 40 minutes to complete. During the second lap, Hines endoed off a rock ledge, but still stretched his lead to 10 minutes. Hines maintained his lead throughout the third lap, but during the fourth lap Kadlec gained slightly. An eighth of a mile from the finish line, Kadlec stole the lead and held on by two feet at the finish. Milonas and Bruckbauer had worked their way through the pack to finish third and fourth, respec1ively. Only six of the 50 riders finished all four laps. • Results OVERALl: 1. Fritz Kadlec (Hus); 2. Mark Hin.. (KTM) 3. Rick Milones (KTM); 4. John Bruckbauer (Hus); 5. Chris Willbanks (H~s). Ryan redundant in SanJoseMX By W.H. Spencer SAN JOSE, CA, DEC. I Rick Ryan (Kaw) had little trouble in gathering the loot for both 125 and 250cc Pro classes at the Medcalf racing facility today, leading a sea of green through the hills. Dean Matson took second in both cases in a close battle with Sweden's Tom Dambers. While Ryan was long gone in the first 250cc round, Matson pursued as Dambers was working his Yamaha hard to catch up and. at the white £lag, he did just that. Setting off up hill from the stan area, Dambers and Matson were elbow-to-elbow, trading spots in the corners. At the high point of the track, just p
