Racing with broken brak e shoes in th e first mota, Schlag di ced with Yam aha rider Devon Joos on th e fir st two laps. Then Honda hot-shot R ick Mythen made h is move on the third lap, pi cked off Joos, and breathed Schlag 's exha us t fumes for the rest of th e moto. Schlag lunged out of the gate in the second moto, getting a clean holeshot, but was closel y pursued by Joos and Yamaha rider Dennis Ostman. It was a wide-open field as Yamaha rider T erry Ba stard came fro m fourth to second pl ace du ring th e first lap. It was th e ho rsepower of Schlag's 500cc versus the maneu verability of Bostard's I25cc as th ey stret ched ou t over th e j u m ps an d sli p ped a ro u nd turns for position. T he n o n lap seven, O stman opened h is throttle to pass Bostard a nd held o n 10 fini sh second behind Schlag, who took th e overa ll Pro cla ss win. Kawasaki rider Darren Galleyler narrowly edged out Honda rider Jack Azevedo for the 250cc Intermediate class titl e. Azevedo jumped out of th e gat es to grab th e holeshot, chased by Yam aha rider T o ny Peixoto and Ga lleyler. Galleyler cu t to th e in side on th e do wnhill turn , passing Peixoto in th e middle of th e first lap. It was a dogfight as Galleyler and Azevedo duked it o ut for th e nex t -five laps. Then in a push-off a fter a n uphill jump, Galleyler edged past Azevedo. Galleyler ma intained his narrow margin 10 take th e win past the checkers . In th e second mota , Galleyler got excell ent field po sition out o f the gates a nd it looked like it would be a runaw a y r ide unt il Azeve do a nd Peixo to started 10 reel him in . With less than a la p 10 go, Ga lley ler on ly maintained a th ree-seco nd lead. with Azevedo a nd Peix oto dicing for second. In each , he came from about fifth place at the crossed flag halfway signal to move steadily up through and past his competitors. Riders were lined up along th e straightawa y fenc e and had to run to their propped-up machines, start them and turn 900 to get on th e co urse. Quickest o f th e runners and owner of th e fastest-starting machine was Joe Macchiarella (H on). His leads in each leg lasted o n ly a bo u t 10 minutes, until Dean Brooks (Hon), Jason Rawli nso n (H on) a nd Ga ry J aehne (Kaw) reeled him in . The hardest ride was turned in by yo u ng Rawlinson o n a 125, as he was ru n ni ng several times in third-place overall in the lat e stages of th e rnoto. The Junior class rider will be a new Intermediate class rider in 1986, a nd he sai d he will definitel y be ready fo r the riders in th at class . Co me back ride o f th e long da y was turned in by Mike Lane (Han) in th e Veteran Master class. H is first-moto crash a nd leg inj ury nearl y prevented him from finishing. Though tir ed a nd very voca l a bo u t req uestin g a longer dela y in th e start of th e seco nd 30-m in u te leg, he reached down in to reserves and ca me up with more effor t a nd sta mina. His overall vic tory in th e class cap pe d ano ther fine season for the popular rid er. Riding beyond hi s previo us best perfo rm an ce was Veteran Interm edia te Gary jaeh ne, today ridi ng as a 250cc Ju nior.
