The firs t-loop trai l was fairl y ea sy for m ost rid ers. T he tr a il featured ca nyo n -type terra in with so me tigh t sw itch -back sectio ns . sa nd wa sh es a nd a few downh ill s, wh ile tractio n was nothing less than perf ect. Riding a t th e to p o f th e hill s was a liu lc tri cky because the fog was so thick it was hard 10 see th e ribbons. Sa mpson a nd Williams zeroed everv check in the fir st loop. whi le Berroth a nd O gilvie eac h d ropped a minute at the fi nal check . The second loop proved to be the much tougher o f the two loop s. The tr ai l ran riders up th e mountainous sec tion where snow became a cr uc ia l factor. About 20 m iles into th e loop. th ere was a -lll-m irru te reset, then things started gelli ng toug h . R ig h t a fter th e reset. Berre th ran into trou ble. " ( got a littl e ou t of sh a pe and wen t through some bus hes thai p u lled -th e odometer ca ble o u t o f th e d ri ve." said Berroth . "From th en o n. I rode by th e brai l m ethod. Someh o w I managed to zero th e nex t ch eck . it was just blind Iuck . After that I sta yed with the riders a m inu te a h ea d o f m e. so I tried to figure things from th ere." Open A rider Ro n Lawson (H us ky 430 Au to ), wh o finished sixth in class. and O pen A Vet rider T om Webb ( H us ky 400), who p laced fourth ill h is. experie nced the same probl em as Berr o th duri ng th e second loop. Between the third a nd fourt h check wa s th e hill th at kn ocked o u t nearl y 70 ride rs from th e even I. It was a jeep trail th a t had turned 10 ice making the clim b n earl y impossi ble. A huge bottle neck fo rm ed . but Sampson was able to get a ru n at th e h ill before th e boule neck a nd made i t to the top reasona bly easy. H e did. ho wever . drop three m inutes th ere. Berroth. wh o rode with studded tires motored u p the h ill a nd around th e bonle neck . but h e too lost three m inu tes . " I put th e studded ti res o n as a joke." said Berro th . " We had th em a t th e shop a nd everyone th er e kiddi ngly sa id I shou ld use th em. so I did . O ver th e ro cks and th rough th e water streams , th e bike was reall y squirrel y. a nd it was lik e rid ing on ice. The hi ll was the o n ly place it was a n adva ntage."
