With mi nd and machi ne being tested, Sampson made a drastic mis ta ke in th e eigh t-mi le Special Test tha t combine d speeds fro m 36 m ph to 24 mph and back to 36 mph. Sam pson crossed th e green ca rds early a nd burnt the check by 45 seconds, losin g two points to add salt to th e wound. Mesech er zeroed th e sa me check , losi n g 13 seco nds . In th e special test, Mesech er cra shed hard , almost breaki ng some ribs and tearing hi s elbow o pe n. He mentioned tha t the ha rd crash slo wed h im dow n just enough to zero the check.
