On lap three Legarra wa s sliding under Green for th e lead when something slowed th e exce lle n t-so u nd ing Triumph. Stringing o u t down th e long backstretch was Sullivan . Roose, T aylor, Adams and Legarra, who apparent ly still had so me en gi ne problems . Everyon e seemed to be having problems tonight as Green slowed on th e back straig h ta way, coas tin g to a stop in turn three. Sullivan sp un out in th e sa me corner, handing the lead to Roose, who wasn't about to let this opportunity slip by. Roose rode a flawless ra ce a ll the way 10 th e checkered flag, followed by Taylor and Adams. Behind th e trio in order was Legarra, Sullivan a nd Green. In th e Min i class, Yamaha-factorysponsored Paul Win made a fir st time a p p ea ra nc e a t th e sho rt track . In th e first mota, Winn grabbed th e ho lesh ot a nd never looked back as h e enj oyed a 40-yard lead over JP Simonsen (H a n) , R yan Anderson (Ka w ), J im Eaves an d Ro n Will iams (Yam ). The flag was o u t for Winn, who breezed home ahead o f Eaves, Anderso n, Simonse n and Williams. In th e secon d rnoto , Simonsen tempo rarily took th e lead, but Winn h ~d it bac k by lap two. Anderson slid arou nd Simonsen in turns 1/2 and set o u t for Winn. The fini shing order was set by lap three, with Winn in front. followed by Anderson , Simonsen an d Eaves. Anderson was on the ga s tr ying 10 reel in the factory ~i~er, but th e sm all amount he was gammg p er lap wasn 't en o ug h before the chec kered flag came out, giving Winn a rela tively easy overall first place for the n ight. T he Double Chance Enduro was th e la st end uro for th e 1985 California G olden S tat e Series with th e first two lo ops bein g scored for the FRA en tra nts a nd a ll three loops ta llied points for th e championsh ip ev ent, Twenty-yea r-old Robb Mesech er put h is Kolbe H onda /American H ondasupport CR250 in th e top ranks of the 300-ride r field a nd nar rowly bea t out h is Answer Products partner, SCali Sa mpson. a lso on a H onda CR250, by 1.045. Followin g th e event, Mesecher co m mented th at Keith Reeves a nd Ra y Hunold, both of Am erican H onda , have literally built hi s CR250 into a rocketship a nd th e hours ha~e paid off. The Double Chanc~ wm wa s swee t a lte r so me hard lu ck m the FRA O ctober event a nd a bad motocross crash in August of this year that put him in the hospital. The dust was th e worst that co u ld be possible, said m any of th e riders. On th e first loop, th e silt and ruts - wer e so bad that th e footpegs on the bikes would drag whil e riding in the ruts, a nd rider flopping over was co m mon p lace even before the 2.9mil e speedo check. Anne Crawshaw of the Training Wh eels MC CLub bested th e Women 's class for the win on th e first loop aboa rd another 250cc H onda. T he second a nd fin al loop for th e FRA riders was a n II -second ballie betw een Mesecher and Sampson. After both riders zeroed th e first three checkpoints, Sa m pson bea t Mesech er by o ne seco nd into the first test section. After checks five a nd six , the second a nd fina l tie-break er chec k, chec kpoi nt seven , was th e decider for th e FRA overa ll win.
