Vohland, Eaton, £IIis top the field at Marysville By M ad ame Mabee MAR YSVILLE. CA. NO V. 17 Kawasaki rider Tyson Voh la nd pulled o u t th e overall win with a 1-2 sco re to wi n th e 125cc Pro class in mo tocross ac tion at Marysvill e. In the firs t rno to Vohla nd pull ed the h ol esh ot o n his 1986 KX 125. Ya m a ha - m ounted Bader Manneh a n d Rod ney H arriger , o n h is 1985 Kaw asak i, followed closely. H arr iger passed Manneh on the secon d la p , bu t by the n Vo hl a nd h ad a good lead . H arriger ga ve ch ase a nd ca ugh t up. but co uld n ' t ge t arou nd Vohland , a nd th e order was set for the finish. In th e seco nd mot a , H arr iger go t o ut first a nd led unt il Manneh took ove r o n the thi rd lap . Vohl and go t a bad sta rt a n d had to work hi s wa v through the pack . H arriger fell o il the fifth lap, a llow ing Steve Oster and Voh land 10 ge t by him. Voh la nd tried to reel in Mann eh , but didn ' t have eno ugh ti me. Manneh took th e checkered 10 win , wi th Voh la nd seco nd, whi le Ha rr iger passed Oster for thi rd. Manneh fin ished 3-1 for second overall , an d Harr iger 2-3 for th ird. In th e first 250cc Pro mot a , H arriger, o n hi s 1985 250 Kawa sak i, grabbed th e hol esh ot and had a co mmandin g lead , wh ile Kell y Andri s, Eri c Ea to n, Da ve Co u pe , Voh land and J im Ellis had a race of their own going. By the fourth lap, Voh la nd had managed to get arou nd th e crowd and set hi s sigh ts on Ha rr ig er. After a five-week layo ff, H arr iger ran o u t of steam a nd Voh la nd passed h im on th e last lap to wi n the first mo to. Second rno to ac tion took a co mplete turn aro u nd , as Ea to n got his Ya ma ha out first a nd thi s time, it was Andris, Coupe, Vohland a nd Harriger, a ll bau lin g 10 get o u t in front. Co u pe passed Andris o n th e second lap, a nd by that time Eaton was nowhere in sig ht. Vo h la nd a nd Ha rriger mov ed u p and the bat rle was o n , b u t Co upe never let o rr. Voh land had to set tle fo r thi rd with Harri ger ta kin g fourth p lace. . Ellis didn ' t ha ve an y luck in the 250cc class , bu t the Open Pro class was a d ifferen t story. He wo n th e overa ll wit h a I-I fin is h. Eaton got the ho lesh ot , bu t a fter th e th ird lap, had mech an ica l problems, an d Ell is took ove r and led to the checkers. Alle n Berl u ti and Pete Fegley diced back a nd forth ; Fegl ey took second a nd Ber lu ri fin ished th ird. O pen Pro moto number two saw Ellis out front with Berlut i a nd Ro n La Po int baul in g for seco nd. Berlu ti went do wn , a nd Jim Fish , on a new Maico , took o ver th ird. La Po int held o n to seco nd a ll the wa y to the fini sh, g iving hi m the o vera ll with a 3-2 score; Fisk fini sh ed third overa ll wi th a 4-3 tall y. In Pro ac tio n, Ken n y Zahrt a nd Eddie Hicks were th e class act with wins in the 125 a nd 250cc classes, resp ectivel y. Ro bby H a m mo nd pou nded the Pee Wees aga in a nd a lso wo n the 60cc Under 8 class. The ove ra ll 60cc win ner was Int ermed ia te J eff Wi lloh, wh o easily wo n both rnot o s, T he blow in g san d ca used a hang up o f the gate at th e sta rt o f moto o ne of P ro racing and force d the race 10 be red -fla gged a nd restarted, bu t the result was the same: Kenny Zah rt was leading on h is 250 AXO H onda , Ka wa sa ki-mo u nt ed J o hn Ray was second o n an O pe n bike, a nd America n H onda 125 rider Mo use McCo v wa s in third. McCo v's a rch -riva l, Eddie Hi cks. was in ' a n extremely tight fou rt h . Ra y a p pea red 10 have broken a sho ck in lap three a nd retired , moving Ti m Hanna up 10 the lead of the Open class. Zah rt d isappeared in the direction of the fini sh line and the checkered. That left McCoy and H icks to en terta in the crowd . McCo y had a bit of a lead at midrace, but H icks began n ibb lin g away at tha t. Two laps fro m th e end, H icks took th e lead , bill McCoy got it back 200 yards lat er. In the middle o f th e last lap , Hi cks fou nd an extra few rpm in h is eng ine and ou t-power ed l\lcCo y to take the lead fo r th e fin al lime a nd the win . McCo y gal ' the hol esh ot in mot a IWO, H anna was next , then H icks. Zahrt was back in the pack somewh ere. l\IcCoy a nd H icks were o u t for blood and th eirs was th e race 10 wat ch. H icks too k th e lead a t the sta n of lap lWO, a nd that was th e race. H e put a ni ce margin between h im self and McCo y and went on for the win - in the 125cc class. Zahrt fought h is wa y up to seco nd overa ll by the midd le o f th e race, but was not ab le to close on Hicks. Tha t did n 't matter ahrt ha d the 250cc class wi n in sin ce Z h is lea the rs, Back in th e O pen class, Ra v had fixed hi s shock between rnot os a nd swept to th e second rnot o win. Dane Wigington followed Ray in second p lace and took seco nd overall in the O pen class . Th e Vets a nd the O pe n Beg in ners rode toget her, bu t tha t did n 't ha m pe r Zahrt , wh o was lon g go ne at the sta n and 1l101 0red directlv 10 the win in bo th mo tos , Expert \ ret Mark Hell er a nd In term ed ia te Vet Ro bert T ippi t had a maj or figh t in bo th more s.
