Swi ss Niederberger from Canada wa s a steady third overall on a BSA Goldstar for so me time, but th e hardcha rg ing pair of Mork a nd Bisson were now gaining o n th e Canadian as they lapped slower traffi c. Number two in th e points, Mike Canepa, wa s a lso hav ing a bad da y, as his 250 Du cati wa s a lso feeling th e strain of 15 races ( I I for points), dropping back to ninth overall , but tyin g Mork for seco nd in points a t th e da y's end . Yamaha ride r H ow ard Womack took th e overall win , but n ot without a co ntest. Elmer Ridd le wa s look ing good a t th e sta rt as he fishta iled hi s H onda up th e hill to a ttac k th e fir st turn , closely pursued by Womack. In a sp ray of mud, th e pack trekk ed down th e s lo pe, slipping a n d s los h in g through th e stra ightaw ay to wa rd th e far h ill. While Riddle and hi s co horts got bogged down in th e mud , Womack m ade it through a nd lapped th e field to take the win. With flagmen doubling as p it workers, Riddle's ma chine was p ried loo se from th e tacky cla y and Riddle hobbled aro un d the track to tak e secon d overa ll. The Intermed iate o ld timers fared better, with six in a field o f II co m pl eting both motos. Husky rider Ernie Starr took th e overall win , with j im Boyd 's Yam aha pe rseveri ng to tak e seco nd overall. Starr led th e field for four laps, th en bit th e mud while Suzuki rid er J im Ricci Sr. a nd Boyd took advantage and slosh ed pa st th e fall en rider. In th e seco nd moto , Starr kept hi s bike u pri gh t a nd took th e win. The boobie prize went to Larry Parker, wh o side-swiped th e flagged boundar y ro pe a fter th e seco nd turn . Th e field narrowed to five sta rte rs by th e third moto, Kaw asaki rider Ed Sm ith go t a poor sta rt , but too k ad va ntage of th e co n ditio ns and passed falle n ride rs Mik e Gildersleeve (MSta r) a nd Suzu ki rider Peter Cruttenden o n th e seco n d la p . Smith h eld o n to tak e second p lace in th e moto , but a 5-6 in the first two mot os gave him a fourth overa ll. Arthur took seco nd overa ll with a 3-4-3 in th e motos . Ya maha rider Steve Ferroni's 1-1-1' ta ll y gave hi m firs t overa ll in th e Vet Expert class. Ferron i go t th e hol esh o t, bu t wa s sp ra yed by th ree riders as they passed him o n the ground in th e seco nd lap of th e first moro, Ferro ni remounted a nd pi cked th e ride rs off o ne-by-o ne. It was a Ferroni-Broby (H o n ) co n test 10 th e fini sh . with Fer. ro n i prevai ling. In th e seco nd mot o , Ferroni, Brob y, and KTM 'rider Powell co m p le ted a ll six la ps, whi le the o th er fo u r sta rte rs spe nt mo st of th eir ti me di ggin g the mse lves a nd th eir ma chines o u t o f the mud. Six o f th e seven sta rte rs made it through all th e laps in th e third mot o. Ferroni took an easv fir st a t th e sta rt a nd left th e o thers' to fight the track. Can-Am ri de r Alan McG evee trod hi s way arou nd for a seco nd pl ace in th e m oto , but h is 5-8-2 scores placed him fo u rt h overa ll. Clear ski es and moderate temperatures brought a record nu m ber of ra cers to Firebird Motocross Pa rk for th e second round of the Arizona State Championship. White, sponsored by Sunn yslope H onda, and Naughton and hi s CR sp o n so red by Oakley and G ear Racewear, sq uared o ff in moto one for th e first time sin ce White nipped Naughton a t Deer Valley. After a race-long dice, White took th e checkered flag with Naughton in seco nd. T he seco nd moto was every bit as exciting, only th is time Na ugh ton turned the tables on White and took th e win . Denn is Parker co nt in ued hi s winning ways by ha ving a perfect da y on hi s Yama ha World-sponso red YZ in th e 125cc Expert class, wh ile Chappy Blose got go ld in th e Open Expert cl ass wi th a I- I fini sh o n hi s Dirt U n lim ited ATK. Chappy Blose Yeo, Rogers wild at Woodland By Derryl Anderson WOODLAN D, WA, N OV . 10 Tro y Yeo (Hon) put away th e competition in the O pen class while Da rren R ogers (Hon) dominated two out of three motos to tak e th e o vera ll for th e day in th e 125cc class scra m bles held at th e Woodland Motocross Park. Moto one in th e Open clas s saw Mike Nida y, j eff Haga and Yeo, all o n H ondas, shoot off th e line aro un d th e sweeper a nd over th e jump three a breas t. Coming ou t of th e eas t corn er first was Niday, H aga a nd Yeo , followed by Da ve Thomas, J ohn Brosseau and Dan Di ckinson (Yam ). In th e right-hander Yeo made an unbelievable pass o n Niday and H aga to fly into the lead . Haga also passed Niday while the rest o f the pack pl ayed ca tch -up . On th e la st lap, Yeo slowed a little, bu t hung on for the moto win ahead of Haga , Niday, Thomas and Dickinson. In rnoto two, Yeo an d H aga ran wire-to-wire in that o rder. Meanwhile, Bro ssea u , Niday and Thomas battled fiercel y, ch an g ing positions several tim es a la p. At th e finish it was Yeo, H aga , Thomas, Brosseau , Niday and Dickinson. Mot o three ca ugh t Yeo napping at the line as fo ur riders h eld th e Honda p ilot back. Thomas led for one lap before falling beh in d Nida y and Haga. Yeo passed Bros seau a nd put together a cha rge th at took him into second by lap three. On th e next lap , Yeo pitched it into th e sweeper hi gh and wide, then passed Niday going over th e jump. Wi th two laps togo Yeo p ushed to a 30-yard lead o n Niday, who had th e sa me ad vantage over Thomas .
