In moto two , Belmick took th e holesh ot 10 lead th e race for o ne lap, until Ron Wa y took co m ma nd for three laps. Seco nd overa ll ca me in a t 3. 166, as Tony Casaga o n a n IT200 took first p lace in th e 200cc A class. Race day dawned refresh ingly co ld, b u t windy. Loop o ne starte d easily th rough th e Slate Min e pit a rea, h eading wes t for 2.8 mi les at 18 mph , th en bumpin g 10 a m or e in teresting 21 mph. At th e five-mi le mark, th e co ur se passed near Galileo Hi ll. At . nine miles, a zeroabl e check-in was follow ed by th e firs t Special T est with 30-m p h speeds. After h ead in g to ward Ca l Citv a nd Park C, th e 10m il e mark er triggered a turn north through th e ro lli ng hi lls, a nd a tiebrea ker chec k-o ut a t 13.5 miles. It fea tured 36 m ph for 3.6 m iles, with a no the r ti e check-o u t a t 28.0 m iles, but thi s time foll ow ed by a healthy 10-m in u te reset at 28.6 mil es to ge t everyo ne back o n tim e. The coo ldown co nt in ued for 2.4 mi les a t 18 mph. At 37.0 miles, th e spee d wen t to 24 mph a nd contin ued to th e end of loop one . Overall loo p o ne winner was Mik e Bonnett, first Mini B, at 6.358. Eric Cook , in hi s seco nd-ever end uro rid e, too k seco nd overa ll and first in the 125cc C-16 class, a t 6.362. foll ow ed bv Craig Flander 's thumper, a t 6.374. The speed dropped to 24 mph heading back to th e pit a rea . Just whe n rid ers th ought th ey had fin ish ed , with ca m p in view , th e co urse tu rn ed eas t toward Red Mountain an d traversed severa l steep sla te o utcro p p ings and severa l extra- lo ng up an d down hills. At the Snider Slat e Min e, riders th is tim e sna red th e real fini sh a t 44.9 mi les. It was not known a t pr ess time wh eth er th e problem in loo p two was a poorl y marked ar ea or th at th e hi gh w in ds bl ew d own-m ark er/ arrow turns. In a nv case, chec ks 10 and II were th row~ o u t 10 co mpensa te th e aff ected co m petitors. . Dan iels zeroed the more difficult seco nd loop, droppi ng h is on Iy point o n loop one. Casaga, sponsored by Bod y Gl ove, was the first o f th e threepoint sco rers . Other class win n ers were Big Bear Trail Rider 's J im Bollingm e, wh o aced th e Open AA Vet class a t 3. 193, co m ing in third overa ll , an d Gr anada Yamaha' s Ra ndy Pr etzer, with a 3.208 sco re th at neued fourth overall a nd first 250cc A class. Dods on finished a t a record speed, a n d also upped th e lap record to 73.55 mph aro u nd th e 37 and 3/ 4-m ile road co urse. CV RG secretarv Mike Green (an d now number one' pl at e holder for 1985), rode th e Sunbeam for a lap of honor 10 help celebra te th e a n ni versary durin g th e lunch break . And th en th e racing began with 13 ma ch ines lined up o n th e gr id, most tr yin g to finish for th e valuable cha m p io ns h ip points. As the flag dropped, so did Walden 's clutch as hi s Triumph burst from th e sta rt 10 grab th e lead. With Willow Spri ngs being a h orsepow er trac k, th e Triu mph wa s quite a t home, and q ui ckl y pulled a good lead on th e sma ller machines. H ow ever, th e rest o f th e p ack was still bunch ed up th rough th e first fou r turns, then thinning o u t down the backstraight. Not fa r behi n d in th e 250cc cla ss, th e overa ll poi nt leade rs were doi ng battle. Fred Mork o n th e Mork Racing Aermacch i CRTT had p u lled ou t a sma ll lead over p oints lead er Green with the Hap J ones/West Coa st British Du car i, but G reen 's cha rge was short -lived as he had ig n itio n problem s entering tu rn n ine on lap one , giving h im h is first DNF of the year, but still leaving him wi th th e Overall CV RG Championship a nd th e 250cc class h on ors. Michele Bisson, a boa rd th e Mork Racing Du cati Yetman, wa s n ow in hot pursuit o f her spon sor, Mork, and in th e process, was pa ssing other 250 and 350cc mach ines.
