NOV. 4 Suz u ki's n ew , oil-cooled GSXRllOO engine makes m ore power and is a n as tonishing 52 p oun ds lighter than the air-coo led GSl150 engine that topped the company's sports bi ke lineu p in 1985. The exa ct numbers are 180 pou nds for th e GSXR llOO engine, com pared La th e G S l 150 power- 10 pl ant 's 232 pounds. The co m p lete GSX R I I00 motorcycle weighs 504 pou nd s wit h ,a fu ll tan k of gas o n a cert ified sca le, co mpared to 56! pounds for th e lightest GS 1150, the un faired GS1150E. Added to th e GSXR lIOO's ligh ter weight is more horsepower, 128 bhp at 9500 rp m, versu s th e G S1150's 119 bhp a t 8500 rpm ; th e GSXRIIOO ha s sligh tly less torque tha n the GS 1150, 77 lb.vft. at 8500 compared to the GS I 150's 81 Ib.ft. at 6500 rpm. The new eng ine ha s a bore a nd stro ke of 76x58mm for 1052cc, compared to the GS 1150's 74x66mm and 1135cc, but is far more compact, wit h a clutch-driven a ltern a tor mounted o n top of th e cran kcases vs. an alterna tor on o ne end of the crankshaft: a t its widest po int, th e GS XR I IOO mea sures 19.3 inc hes, vs. the GS 1150's 22.1 inches.
