Lamb once again jammed into the lead at the start of the second moto ahead of Camden, Clark a nd Hodge. But Hodge was the one to watch as he inched h is way up through the pa ck , and into the lead by the halfway point. Hodge stayed on th e gas th roughout the moto and took the win , wh ile Lamb a nd David Griffith fini shed second and third. Overa ll stand ings had Hodge takin g the win a hea d of Lamb, Clark, J eff Korhon en , G riffi th, Randy Klessig and Joh n Ca mden. Nielson nips Pros at Vegas By D ick Goodwin LAS VEGAS , NV. ocr. 20 Man y out-of-state ra cers in vad ed th e Las Vegas Motocross Park facility for th e 7-Up Classic today, and when it was all over , it was San Jose, California , resident Ricky Ryan nailing th e 125cc Pro win , wh ile Scott Nielson from Utah a n d Greg Vowell wrapped up wins in th e 250 and 500cc Pro clas ses. In th e 500cc P ro bout, N ielson jammed into the lead ahead o f Scott Underwood and Anthony Pasqual lotto. A few turns into the race, Underwood blew by N ielson over a jump, whi le Pasquall otto cra shed elsewhere on th e track, giving Sean Steele th ird. Ni elson kep t th e pressu re o n Underwood, while Steele did the sa me to N ielson. Shortly after , Nielson found hi s wa y back in to th e lead as U nderwood dro p ped back to th e number -three sp o t. H a lfwa y th rou gh the race, wh ile enjoying a comfortabl e lead , Ni elso n sta lled h is motorcycle, letti ng bo th Steele and Underwood by. Steele was sett ing a blisteri ng pace un til he endoed spec tacularly over the double jumps, ret irin g him for the day. This gave the lead to U nde rwood , who went on to win th e race ahea d of Ni elson. In ro u nd two , Billy Hill stole the hol esh ot ahead of Underwoo d a nd Nielson. The three leaders battled closely for th e first few laps before both Underwood and Ni elson sli pped by Hill and sta rted to pull away . Nielson was gett ing faster and faster with eac h lap , and he event ua lly nipped Underwood before th e finish and took the win. Overall results had Underwood taking second a head o f Dal e Bohm and Hi ll. The l25cc Pro race had Ryan taking th e ea rly lead a t the start o f the first moto but was hounded by Vowell and Er ic Sackett. Both Vowell and Sackett found th e ho t lin e into the firs t a nd second posit ions until Ryan got back on the gas and moved into seco nd . Ryan began pulling awa y from Sackett but couldn ' t gain a n y distance on Vowe ll by the fini sh . Ryan aga in blasted into th e lead a t the start of the second moto, whi le Vow ell ch ased . Ryan a nd his Kawa sa ki managed to ho ld on to h is lead throughout the moto despite stro ng challenges by Vow ell. In the first moto, Blanken ship used h is new starti ng technique to captu re th e holesh ot ahead of J eff Schneid er. Blanken sh ip contin ued to hold co mmand o f hi s lead , while H onda rider T rell Keen moved in on Sch nei der. The two battled right dow n to the wire , a nd o n th e fin al lap , Keen mad e one last a ttempt to pass Sch neide r a nd succeede d . Th e win went to Blanken sh ip , followed by Keen a nd Sch ne id er. Keen and Bla nk en sh ip spe nt most of th e seco nd mot o in a duel for th e lead. Durin g th e first two laps, the two traded positions a co u ple of ti mes, with Blanken shi p ta kin g con trol. H ow ever , Bla nk ensh ip even tua lly cras hed, givi ng Keen a hu ge lead. Sco tt Deane an d Ron Morris swept past the downed rider. Soon af ter, Morris mot o red by Deane, taking o ver th e seco n d spo t. Near th e end o f th e mot o , Keen m ysteriously sta rted slo win g down , a llowing Dean e a nd Morri s to go by. Blanken sh ip had recovered from h is crash andwas on th e ga s, passing both Deane a nd Morris a nd tak in g th e wiri an d ove ra ll. Morris took second a head o f Deane. Shawn J ones, Kirk Patterson a nd Erik Kohl a lso got on th e Steve Wi se honor ro ll wh en th ey capt ure d the first th ree spots in th e l25 cc Junior class. Jones, a board a 1986 KX Kawasaki, dominated both motos by taking wins each tim e o u t. Patter son led the ent ire first mot o , o n ly to be pa ssed by J ones on the white-fla g lap. Round two had Jones taking th e early lead a hea d of Patter son. Patterson sta yed close all th e way but co uldn't make a dent in Jones ' lead. Patterson took second overall ahead of Kohl.
