In turn fou r on lap one whi le the front trio freight trai ned away, Michel e Bisso n , on a Ma rk Racin g 250 Yetma n Du ca ri, made an o utside passing move o n Chris Qu inn's Wheel Works Ducati 250, while J im Cooper, a board th e o nly su rvivin g 350 Bul taco , dove for Quinn 's in side a n d sa n d w ic he d Quinn in th e middl e. Bisson got through and made th e pass suck,.but Quinn left battle sca rs o n the right sid e of Mich ele' s Duca ti. Cooper a lso made it through , but unloaded in turn two o n th e next lap while trying to go wid e around Bisso n. Ca nepa tried the entire race to pass Green, but d idn 't hav e a n y success as Green o u t-ho rsepowered him down the straightaways. Canepa's hopes carne a live when Green missed a shift o u t of tu rn II a nd h is bike started to wo bble d ue to wh eel beari ngs . Green was sti ll a ble to ho ld o n, a nd p u lled a way wh en Ca nepa a lso missed a shift. Not far behi nd, Q uin n was on the hum to tak e bac k fourth from Bisso n , bu t wh ile both did a bit of bat tl ing. Qui nn 's motor went sou th lea ving him with a DNF. This moved J eff H~cox, o n a 250 Aerm acchi , borrowed from Canepa in to fifth . At th e fini sh , it was Wa ld en wh o crossed the line first to take th e 500cc win over Troetschl er.
