Hall 's clos est competition was an o ut-of-retirement Loren Shockey aboa rd his '84 C R250. Shockev sh owed flash es of bri lliance b u t cQli ldn ' t sta y o n th e fra ntic pace set by H all. J im Lyngar (H us ) ra ced with Shockey during th e ea rly go ing o f th e first mo to but fell ba ck to fini sh a d istant thi rd. Lyngar didn 't fini sh th e second race a nd Ketchum 's Ri ch Tay lor (Kaw) wat ched Shoc key 's rear tir e in th at o ne. Some good racing was a lso seen in th e Open Expe rt contest with Lyngar h aving it o u t with Larry "Actio n " J a ckson on th e big bores. Lyngar got the o vera ll by virtue o f his 2-1 showin g , th ough " Action J ackson" had looked super hot in th e first race . Frisk a nd Lees were motorin g along brisk ly, but it d idn 't take th e old guys more th an a few laps to start comi ng up on th em from behind. Kell er dropped back, though, and co u ldn' t hold off Cycle Nuts ' N Bol ts' Dick Rockrohr (H us). In oneof th e even in g 's la rge r c1 ass- es, th e 14-man Open B bash , two qualifiers were staged with Ross Boyd (H us) and Roger Slack (Yam) ge tt in g th e wins. Boyd ca me a way with the big win in the main whi le Slack was n udged into th ird by Matt Spencer (Ka w). AUG. 18 Meril Moen , Wa yne Even , and Jeff Berglund proved LO be th e sta rs of th e WERA South Central National held a t O ak Hill Raceway. The tr io exce lled in slip p ing, slid ing, wh ee/standi ng bo u ts in th e A Su perb ike a n d Formula One Expe rt ra ces. Moen , o n hi s Central '. Cycle ..S upply.'9Q() inja tuned ' by' G arvi n Alle n , netted firsts in both cla sses bu t not wirhou r the two ot her rid ers breathing down his neck all day long. Even, riding a Kawa saki 750 Superbike spons ored by th e RLM co m pa ny, bested Berglund in th e first Superbike m at ch , but h ad to sett le for th ird in Formula One wh en Berglund kept his Steve Rolf-tuned Katana in second past the ch eckered flag. In both races. there was much lead swapping and lot s of show-stoppi ng actio n th a t had th e record crowd o n th ei r feet. Even a lso took th e same bik e to th e B Su perbike victo ry, a nd Moen netted fir st in C Producti on, seco nd in C Su perbike a nd third in A P ro d uct ion o n h is stoc k 600 Nin ja. J am ie J ames, a har d-ch a rging firstyear Expert , had lot s o f ups and downs this race da y. He wo n C a nd D Superbike o n hi s T oomey-equipped RZ350, but fell wh ile dicin g for the lead in Formula T wo an d B Production o n hi s FZ750. In th e initial Formu la T wo race, he had just passed Matt Mas chmann wh en an off tra ck excu rsio n damaged hi s front brak e asse m bly. After fixin g it before the B Production ra ce, he wa s soo n di cing with Maschmann aga in. Fat e stepped in a n d th e front brakes failed aga in . J ames crashed unh urt bu t th e bike was finished for th e day. James was in good spirits a fter th e rac es, a nd is a lrea dy pl anning his a ssault for next yea r, trying to decid e whether to spend a no th er yearat the cl u b level or to go o n to th e Na tional seri es. Ronnie Lunsford, a veteran racer from Northwest Honda in Houston, returned after a several-month absence to a successfu l da y. The proud, new father o f twin gi rls took h is Interceptor Superbike to a second in Formula Two a nd a third in B Superbike. Ma schmann took his FZ750 to his first wins o f th e year in B an d A Pr oduction. H e a lso took th e bike to a seco n d in B Superbike. He was o ne o f th e firs t cl u b rid ers to ge t o ne o ft he n ew Yamahas a nd a fter a stri ng o f seconds in th e p ro du ction classes, wi n n ing was swe et. H e ran a hard , steady pace in a ll o f th e co n tests and lead ing fro m sta rt to fin ish with few exce p tio ns.
